Newbie tractor owner

Hello all. Not sure if this is the correct group for this but I just wanted to say hi and share my first tractor. A L245DT with FEL

I recently bought a new home with a little acreage and lots of ground work/ trees to clean up. I had been looking for something that could handle brush, gravel, and just some other random tid bits. Being a little tighter on cash I came across this deal and thought it was a good starting point that didn't break the bank. I was concerned about the age but the general vibe I got was that they were pretty decent tractors.

I just got it home tonight and had to play for a while

only noticeable issues:
-Main lift hydraulics shutter on the up like a dresser drawer slightly
-some blowby coming out by the dipstick area
-little grinding into gear but just have to take your time, not bad.

I am excited and hope it remains together. just have to start doing default checks like fluid flushes and grease points.

TM9311, welcome. If your tractor starts without difficulty the compression is probably just fine and any blowby should not be a problem. I'd say change out all the fluids. Make sure you're pressing the clutch pedal completely down before shifting. Clutch linkage may need a slight adjustment.

Go here http://www.kubotabooks.com/AutoIndex/ to get an owners manual and also a workshop manual. This will be all the information you'll probably need to learn about your tractor.

After changing the fluid, greasing and any adjustments you notice in the manual, get back with us and the hydraulic chatter can be addressed.

It's a nice older machine that with proper maintenance can go another 25/30 years!

Sorry I did not get a notification anyone responded. Thanks for the tips. I did get a service manual for the tractor and the loader that I need to study. I do need to do all fluids. I think I read the new UDT fluid is recommended but I have to keep reading. Its too easy to get on and have a ball all night just messing around.


Its starts very easy, a few puffs of white (pretty sure not a hint of gray) smoke but never again after that. Coolant looks great so not too worried.

The blowby I noticed is coming out of a hose that goes up to the valve cover. I would say its acceptable for a 30+ tractor. It still seems to have plenty of power to spins the tires and digs in so I am happy with it. I was originally looking for a brush hog but the stuff seems to be 2+inches and I may just bite the bullet and rent a skidsteer hog and do everything quickly and effectively and not beat up my old tractor. There will be plenty of tilling and grading to do that.

As far as the clutch, I noticed tonight there is a simple adjustment on it. again, just need to open that manual.


I rambled but thanks for the response and I look forward using my new tractor. I think I am going to become of the people that says "I don't know how I lived without it"

sorry for the late response. I didn't get a notification that anyone responded and then my response did not post..? anyway

I saw last night that the linkage was adjustable, I do have a manual that i just need to study. I started ordering filters but spent a lot of time cross referencing everything. got air, oil, and fuel filters on the way. There are a TON of drain plugs so now I need to find fluids.

I am building a tooth bar for it right now, should of just bought one, but oh well. I found myself going outside to do something else on monday but ended up just playing on it all night

I think I am going to start sounding like one of those guys that says "i dont know how I lived without it" haha.

For getting most out of OTT.... suggest you review the Ulitmate Readme atop each section. Tons of useful information linked there. Would have saved you a lot of time on cross referencing part numbers. You see the Part #'s online are all updated already at the American Kutoba Website plus there is great links there to folk who carry the right parts.. the first time.
