All of a sudden my M9960 would not turn over when I tried to crank it. I hooked jumper cables to and it cranked. I ran it for a few hours and everything seemed ok. I tried to start it a few days later and it did the same thing except it wouldn't jump off, so I bought a new battery for it and it still would not turn over. I jumped across the starter and it turn over as normal but would not crank. Any ideas?

Check the negative lead where it mounts to the chassis for corrosion. I've had the same issue with my M's in the past. I've removed mine, sandpapered it and applied di-electric grease to mitigate the corrosion.

Make sure your battery terminals are bright and clean too before you install them.

When you "jumped the starter" are you jumping the two large terminals, if so that's wrong, it won't crank over when you do that, you need to jump from the large top terminal with the battery cable attached, to the small single wire connection to engage the solenoid and the starter.

When you get in it and turn the key do the dash light come on?

If they do you have a safety switch is engaged/ out of adjustment / or broken or the starter relay that is failing or you have blow a fuse.

I don’t understand what you mean by this statement.

New battery, won’t crank with the key?
But shorting across the terminals on the starter (solenoid) it will turn the engine but engine does not fire up and run?

Please clarify and you may get better or different answers.

I've noticed on this forum when some folks discuss an engine problem, the word "crank" is synonymous with "start". I always use the word "crank" to describe the engine rotating, or turning over. "Start" is when the engine is running without the key being used.

"Turn over" and "crank" mean the same to me.

The difference in definitions might be a regional thing.
