New subscriber and first thread. Hi all. Just purchased a used M9540 cab tractor. 1180 hours.
1)There is a hydraulic whine coming from the transmission and possibly the hydraulic steering control. It is appearent at most engine speeds, but more appearent when the steering wheel is turned. Fluid is crystal clean and at normal operating level, not sure when it was last changed or what specific fluid is in it. I have operated a M125 before and don't recall this whining.
2) The shuttle transmission (not hydraulic) seems very stiff and tends to grind going between f-n-r, but clutch travel and pressure feel good. Any chance the whining and shifting are related? BEfore I send to dealer, any recommendations?
3) Part of the dash display cluster lights don't seem to work, including the glowplug light, 4x4 light, steering turn light basically all indicator lights in the one little cluster below digital spead/ hour meter. Fuses all good.

This is probably no help, but mine whines until the oil warms up. The colder it is the longer it takes to quit. I try to start it and let it warm a few minutes before using.

Otherwise, I can't answer any of your questions. Will be curious to know the results though.

I changed out the hydraulic fluid on my M7040 at 50 hours with cheap fluid from Tractor Supply (Premium).

It picked up a noticeable whine and the hydraulic shift was uncooperative and jerky.

After 20 more hours it was changed out with New Holland Ambra and all of the problems went away. Works perfectly now.

As long as basic functions are correct I would tend to agree with GWD. Since you really don't know when the fluid was changed or what kind is in there that would be my first task, change the fluid and filters. It seems that some people believe you can replace premium fluid with cheap stuff from TSC, Walmart, ect. and not loose performance. That's not the case by a long shot. In the perfect world you could get high performance from low grade products. In the real world you get what you pay for.

So UDT, Super UDT or what? Probably best to go back with what was in it from Kubota and see if it fixes symtoms I guess????

It came from the factory with SUDT fluid. I think Kubota has replaced that with SUDT 2 which is even better. There are better fluids out there but you won't go wrong filling it with Kubota fluid either.

Any idea who makes the SUDT-2 for kubota? I am ready to change mine but the price is high. I want to go with top quality but would like to find it at a better price. We all know that Kubota does not manufacture oil and filters.

Local dealer keeps the HST filters in a vault.

Thanks

Truth be known Kubota is probably taking a 100% synthetic fluid and blending it 3 to 1 with UDT and that gives them their 75% synthetic blend fluid or SUDT 2. It may be out there but I haven't seen a aftermarket fluid rated at 75% synthetic.

Kubota probably buys millions of gallons of oil each year so I'm sure they get a huge discount from their supplier. That being said I don't think you will find a aftermarket fluid that meets SUDT 2 specs at a lower price. Yes, there are better fluids out there but you will pay more to get them. Just my $.02

Well I changed the hydro fluid with 16gals of udt and two new filters. Now the hydraulics and wallet is whining. Seems like most of the whine is coming fr the steering unit and sometimes it won't turn while at a stand still even without a load.Thoughts anyone?

Napa can cross reference all the kubota belts and filters for a small fraction of Kubota dealers prices. they can also get you the valvoline full synthetic trans oil that's allegedly the same synthetic base as the super udt 2 without the small percentage of non synth oil added in.

The spec on the valvoline unitrac are nowhere near the same as SUDT2 fluid. That is all I could find that they listed as a all weather fluid. It may be cheaper than what I found but it was $100 per 5 gal.

Fast*st, I guess it's all in where you look. I found a pdf. from Valvoline on that fluid but none of the numbers were nothing like what you posted. Pour point for example was -21, and really nothing else was close either. I went back and found the one I saw and it was from 04. I see the date on the info you found was this years. I guess they have made a few changes and or improvements. Thanks for the post, that was helpful info to compair.

I'm trying to recall, it might be Chevron that blends up the oil for Kubota, they have Chevron Synthetic All-Weather THF which claims to meet udt and super udt specs, maybe we need to just compile a bunch of data and see who is the closest and what the prices are. That was an old post so I sent Chevron an email and asked what they had that met the super udt2 spec.

Y'all hijacked my thread.
Hey, no whinin! :) Hydraulic pumps that scream and whine are usually due to cavitation, suction side restrictions or oil viscosity too high, trying to find a lower cost alternative to the low viscosity super udt2. Yar Har! thread pirates matey!

Me thinks I have a problem with the steering unit. Most of the whine seems to be coming from the steering unit and more appearent when the whell is turned. My wallet cant stand another oil change. Anyone know anything about the steering units? Failure prone? Repairable? Ran a smaller rotary cutter yesterday for several hours through heavy brush (small trees). Althoguh the engine never struggled, the whine inside the cab was pretty anoying, too the point I was looking for earplugs.

Thoughts other then amsoil or oil alternatives? Howabout the pressure releif valve, is it servicable?

you might be able to lift the wheels with the bucket and slowly move them side to side, it might be just air trapped in the steering cyls. Is there a seperate steering hydraulic system? Suppose it could be a stuck bypass someplace.
