Are you sure the tractor ran out of fuel in the first place? Could it be that something else happened to the fuel system making you think it had run out of fuel? If you have rubber fuel lines coming from the tank to the lift pump, it could be that the inside of the rubber fuel line is collapsing when sucking fuel. I have had that happen before on a couple of payloaders when they got a few years on them. You can blow thru them but when they are sucked on by the pump, the inside of the rubber hose collapses, blocking fuel flow.

the fuel light had come on and been on for about 20 min according to my dad. He was trying to finish up a small lot without having to load up and get fuel and then come back.

We got it loaded up today by using a gear oil bottle to gravity feed. it would run for a few min and then have to stop to let air get back in the bottle. it did fine to get the hydros to pull up both wings of the bush hog and to load it on the trailer.

Thanks for the help.
