noticed this the other day well doing the 1000hr service.
wondering if I can remove the front wheel case without taking the bevel gear case off the diff housing? The only seal I can see that could be leaking is this oil seal circled in the one pic and #50 in the Messicks pic. It’s the only oil seal I can find between the wheel case and bevel gear case. That could be leaking. I see #80 and #110 in the other messicks of the complete rh setup are also oil seal and o ring for bevel gear but one for top side and other between bevel gear and differential. Hope this makes sense.

Yep…. Same leak as on my M4700. It was not difficult at all. I did it using a floor-jack and a jack-stand.
The most difficult thing was created by myself… I didn’t realize I hadn’t removed the COMPLETE seal…and left part of the old seal still in the case. This destroyed the new seal when I tried to press it into position. When I realized the old seal had separated into two pieces…. I then obtained a second seal… removed ALL of the old seal…and the new one pressed into position without difficulty..

Here is where I revealed my error and how I fixed it: https://www.orangetractortalks.com/...-case-oil-seal-replacement.56731/#post-536520

Well with little response aside from geohorn (thanks by the way) and already being 3 pages deep guess I’ll just tear into it and see how it goes. Once I can confirm the the issue I can get the parts. Pretty sure it’s that seal though.

Hey, you'll be in a position to help others once you're done. I have a similar tractor (with a lot less than 1,000 hours) so anything you learn could help me and others at some point.

Gladly will help with anything I can. thought I might have had more response to this one. I bet if I asked what type of oil to put in it it would have blown up lol. I will snap some pics and make a post about the job once I tackle it.

There are way fewer M series tractor owners on this forum so it's to be expected. :giggle: It takes more time and effort to document this sort of thing but it can be very helpful to others.

Yep as in I can remove the wheel case without removing the bevel gear case with no issues?
There are two snap rings to remove and the wheel case drops down from the upper bevel gear case. The article I linked to above described the process. The lowest snap ring was not evident but must be removed to drop the wheel case down/away from the upper case.
The old seal can be withdrawn ..the new seal installed, and the lower case lifted back up onto the upper case, … reversing the procedure. About a 1.5-2 hr job.

I used 80W90 gear oil to replace the original SUDT. (I already had a 5-gal bucket of the stuff and…well…Hey!….that SUDT LEAKED! So far….. everything’s still dry!!) 😝

It took 8 qts.

Yes, you can remove the wheel case without removing the bevel case. It is a very straightforward repair.
It is not similar to an F series mower.

Thanks whitetiger. It looked pretty straightforward but my wsm shows them coming off together and figured I could leave the bevel gear in place. Just wasn’t 100% on it. I’ve been bit in the butt by straightforward looking jobs before so I thought I’d check in on this one first. You’re also correct about the f series but appreciate the attempted help. Probably gonna wait till after maple season to do the repair but I’ll post it along with some photos for others.
