Driving down the highway and car in front of me bobs to one side avoiding a log he justa saw falling off a truck in front of him.

Unfortunately too late for me though. I hit it. Took out whole driver side wheel, steering components, brakes etc. on my only car. A beat up rusting away VW diesel that gets me nearly 45mpg.

car steered right off the interstate just fine. What scared me was all the other cars dodging the log behind me. Several nearly drove off the road into me.

Last car to hit log; like me flew in the air a bit, but they came back down on the log and then preceded to nearly hit me as he/she drug it off to the side of road as well. Not sure why but that person did stop but as I walked up to see if they were ok, drove off before I reached them. Walking back I grabbed the log and put it in back of my car. When it gets towed home at least I can cut it up and burn it in my woodstove in this weekends NorEaster storm lol

Cops told me a fellow saw it happen and called them with the trucks License plate info. They contacted them and got his insurance info for me. Unfortunately, cop (highway patrolmen) says he has a record and there is doubt he actually has insurance though he claimed he did. Will see.

Ohhh.. and tripple A FUBARed and had not auto renewed my policy. Least they offered to renew it without having to repay membership sign up fees. If Car does not get impounded in 48 hours (cop thought they would leave it alone if I put a note on it; which I had already done) then I can use AAA to tow it home on Monday.

Well, you know you are insured for everythin but what happens to you.
Glad you came out ok.

My kid rubbed a pole and pulled front bumper off car. Insurance wanted to write it off and give me diddly for a good solid dependable car. Wife talked to agent and they managed to up value of car to keep it from being a total loss, over a hunk of plastic. So i drag out my good spare bumper and visit body shop to make a deal to keep repair cost within the insurers limit.

Doesent sound like your car is going to pull through. Hope insurance is on your side.

Coachgeo, I suppose every state is different, but here you have 48 hrs after the officer puts a sticker on the car(that has the time and date of application).

If you have AAA weekends should make not difference.

Be thankful you're OK and the log hit the road before it hit the car!

Glad you're OK, even if the car isn't.
Had a similar scare a few years back, except I was lucky and dodged it- and it wasn't a log, it was a 10" diameter, 21' long piece of 6061 aluminum barstock. Several cars went off the road to avoid it, but no one hit it. Another guy & I were able to roll it off the road, and I would have loved to take it home, (would have kept my shop in aluminum for the rest of my natural life) but of course it was too heavy to lift. I passed the spot 2 hours later, & it was gone.

I hit one of those big 40ft extension ladders one time. Guy in front of me had it unsecured on top of a ladder rack in his truck. Bounced off and spun sideways in the road. Ladder took up both lanes. Car going the other direction hit it about the same time I did with my ford ranger. My ranger was fine. But it tore the exhaust off the car.

North of me used to be a pulp and paper mill. Buddy used to haul wood in winter. His boss was in truck ahead of him and a stake broke, dumping a bunk of wood on highway. Try dodging about 3 cords of 8 foot pine at 50 mph. Broke one grease nipple. Homeowner nearby got his winter worth of wood for free. Almost delivered.

Coach, glad you are ok and have no injuries and only car damage.

Speaking of insurance, even if they have it, it doesn't mean a smooth ride to repairs. My wife was rear-ended on 12/30/15. Guy DID have insurance (The General) but he never filed a claim, we had to do that, we had to supply the police report, we had to threaten to call the state dept of insurance and file a formal complaint twice. Took until the end of Feb to get her car back and repaired, what a nightmare!

Reminds me of an incident that happened with a friend of mine. We were driving down the interstate, chatting away and I see an object in the road. My friend, who was driving, didn't see it until it went under the car. Fortunately for her it was a seat cushion for a couch so no damage. But I couldn't understand why she didn't see it when I saw it a good mile away and watch as other cars drove around it.
