Hello, new to the forum.
My question is: while replacing the piston seals, I noticed that there were no o-rings or seals on the piston to rod junction. There are two beveled areas on the rod that are underneath where the piston sits, but when I disassembled it, there were no seals/o-rings present. Is this normal? It seems that oil could get by this area. The bucket was leaking off a little too much is why I did the rebuild in the first place. Thanks

If the nut is tightened properly the chance of fluid bypassing that point is very minimal. ;)
Putting any kind of flexible seal in there would fail from movement of the piston on the shaft.
If your worried about it, put a little Teflon paste on the shaft before installing the piston.

Wolfman, The nut did seem loose compared to what I have heard other folks say (500 ft Lbs). It looks like if the nut were really tight, the piston would not wiggle much. The piston seals appeared to be OK - I thought it might this union that was bypassing.
Thanks for the prompt response.
