I picked up an HST filter & a transmission filter for my L5240. I got the HST filter off, but the new filter did not fit. They are not the same. I took the old & the new filter back & the guy looked them up. There is a threaded pipe adapter. I put it together the way the picture showed. It did not leak. I had to let it sit overnight, still no leaks. I started it this morning, and the fluid was all pushed out.
Either I didn't assemble it correctly, or there is another piece missing.
Also, any suggestions on getting the other filter off? I've broken two filter wrenches.

Give part numbers and pictures would also be helpful.

OK, first, the old filters are not Kubota, they are WIX. The only number I see on the WIX HST filter says 55. The part number on the HST filter I got from the Kubota dealer says HHTA0-59900. My phone doesn't do good pictures.

You're gambling with the Wix 55 as it's not listed as a cross to the HHTA0-37710.

The HST filter is HHTA0-59900
If you didn't install the nipple into the case properly that could be why the filter didn't stay sealed.
The slotted end ends to be pointed out.

Thank you for that picture. I did have the nipple inserted correctly. I think I figured out the problem but have to get some fluid refilled before confirming the problem. I was looking at the nipple & focused on that as the problem, I completely ignored the fact that the O ring was so loose it wouldn't stay in place when I was holding the filter. I think it probably was not seated when I did my final tightening and when I started the tractor and tried to raise the 3 pt hitch, the fluid just blew by the O ring.
P.S., the WIX filter was what was on it for the last 5 years. Now, I have to get the other transmission filter off.

Many people suggest an air chisel to break the filter loose. The base ring should have some notches on it for a certain type of wrench/pliers. Get a really good strap wrench if you’re using cheaper versions of that. Cut any paint from around the filter to tractor joint

The WIX filter on the engine?

The other filter HHTA0-37710 is a hydraulic filter not a transmission filter, yes same fluid, different job. ;)

No, the engine filter was replaced a couple months ago with an oil change & gas filter change. The other one I need to change is on the opposite side of the tractor as the HST filter, near the same general location. The parts man kept calling it a transmission filter. As soon as the HST filter problem is fixed, I'm going to call in some help on it, and I suspect we'll end up punching it with a screwdriver.

No notches on the Wix filter, but I will try cutting any paint that might be sticking there. I broke two strap wrenches, not cheapie ones either; I damaged a third strap/chain wrench. The one I'm using now works like a vice grip.

If it's a wix filter it's not painted on unless someone other than kubota painted it.
And considering the Wix filter does not cross to the right filter for the hydraulics, I wouldn't be too surprised if the threads are damaged on the filter or housing and that's why it's not coming off.

You can use a dull chisel on the base of the filter to knock it around and see if it will break loose.

Update: My apologies for being all over the place in reporting my issue with this filter, my eyesight degenerated last fall, and I need to replace my glasses for near vision.
When #050 & #060 ended up not working, I discovered there was a 3/8 inch thick plate with an attached larger nipple that fit the WIX filter. That plate screwed onto the smaller nipple inside the tractor. The new #060 screwed inside the nipple on the plate, new filter, #050, screwed on, but the large nipple blocked the filter from screwing on all the way. I removed the plate & the new Kubota filter screwed onto the #060 nipple that had been there all along. As soon as it quits raining I'll refill the fluid & fire it up.

Yes that's a filter adapter, they fool a lot of people.

Final update on the filters. Once I got the HST filter replaced, I did some light duty work and parked the tractor on a dry spot. I sat on the ground, braced my feet against the back tire & my back against the front tire. I used the vice grip style filter wrench, and got that filter off! I crushed and ripped the old filter but that was the only damage. I had hoped getting it warmed up would help me get it off, and it did. The new Kubota filter fit this side perfectly, no adaptors on this side!

The last time I changed the Filter (Was not the first time) I was using the Kubota strap wrench with a 3' pipe and a air chisel.
