I've got an L3800 HST, 4x4, FEL and R1 tires. I have a 4' disk but I'm going to purchase a larger one this Spring. Is a 6' adjustable disk too big for my rig? I have been leaning towards a 5' because I don't want to overload my tractor.

What are you pulling with your L3800 and how does it perform for you? Thanks

My father has the same tractor as you and he pulls a Leinback model 245 they are made near Charlotte NC. It has 20 18" blades and is 6&1/2' wide which covers the tracks and allows you to turn around and keep the tires on level ground not in furrow you just made. We normally drop the loader when disking or mowing.

I have the L3901 which has roughly the same horses as the L3800. I believe they both have virtually the same lift capacity on the three point ; roughly 2000 lbs at the lift point and 1500lbs at 24" behind it. I have a 6 1/2 foot set of disc with (16) 20" blades. The disc weigh 800 to 1000 lbs. I keep mine in 4WD and it does just fine pulling them.
They sell these in Monroeville at South Alabama Kubota. Not too far from you! http://darrellharpenterprises.com/product-lines/harrows/model-500-harrow.html

I have the same tractor as the OP. Pulled a 4 foot last year no problem. I have looked at the 6 1/2 foot disc at the dealer in Monroeville, seems solid. Good to hear that ours can pull one that size.

I pull a trail type IH disc with my L3000, it's about 9' or 10' wide. I think it has 32 or 34 16" disc. I have to use 4x4 but it pull it just fine.

Problem with that is most of my tractor work is for food plots, which most are under 1/4 acre. Some places are only as wide as the tractor itself.

Bumping this to the top. Local tractor dealer(not Kubota) said I would risk burning up the HST pump by trying to pull a disc to large for my tractor.
Any more input with pulling a 16x20 disc with a HST?

All the more reason to have a shuttle shift with gears. Not Liquid!!!!!!!!!

This might be a good excuse to look into changing over to a full synthetic hyd / trans fluid. I have recorded tranny temps as much as 70 degrees cooler after switching my fluid.

"Local Tractor Dealer(not Kubota)" is just trying to scare you into buying a tractor from him.
An HST can handle just as much if not more than a Geared tractor.
Hydrostatic drive systems are used on several thousand ton Rock trucks without issues, and in fact work better than a gear driven unit could ever think of working! :D

The disk manufacture should have a rating on their disks for HP requirement, follow that requirement and you'll be fine. ;)

Not to argue but rock trucks is something I do know and I have never seen any brand that has a hst tranny. Some have a automatic like a normal pickup does it's just super sized. Most of the really large trucks have is diesel / electric like a train. Each wheel will have a electric drive motor instead of a normal final drive system. Cat is one of the only companies that have stuck with a standard final drive configuration even on their largest equipment. The 797 is their largest dump truck and is rated for 400 tons. The biggest in the world that I know of is the Belaz 75710 which is rated for almost 500 tons. None even come close to 1000 tons and probably never will. All the companies have reached the limits of the tires and at this time nothing bigger can be produced.

Wolfman, I'm not trying to piss you off and I hope you don't take it that way because you are always giving some of the best advise.

Not at all, honestly it was bad info on my part, brain went south!
I'm human and yes sometimes I have an idiot ridden moment!:p
I was thinking of hydrostat drive systems and mixed it up with diesel to electric systems just like you pointed out and like locomotives use.
Several thousand Pounds is a heck of a lot different than several thousand tons (2000 Pounds per ton), OOPS!

I do think that hydrostats are as tough as geared in most situations, but that I guess that is more of a personal preference than any actual data to back it up. ;)

I still stand by my statement:
"The disk manufacture should have a rating on their disks for HP requirement, follow that requirement and you'll be fine."
I think that's honest and good advice. :D

My dad (L3800) and I (L3700) both use 20 blade disk which are 6'10' wide. We have ran for 7-10 hours strait and no issues so far just be sure to clean your hst cooler when you clean the radiator. We only use Kubota oils also. My dealer states he sells 7-10 hst to one gear drive.
