We got my dad's tractor stuck in a place where it seemed like it should have been able to get out of. It was on an incline facing downhill with no implement on back and the FEL attached. There was approximately two inches of mud.

My question is that the left side wheels (front and rear) did not seem to be spinning, even after engaging 4wd and even trying the diff lock pedal. Any thoughts on what is going on here?

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know the diff lock pedal was fully depressed. Getting the tractor unstuck is not the issue, it's the fact that the both left side tires did not seem to be driving (spinning). Thank you for the input.

That's completely normal and expected with an open differential. If the rear differential lock works, then it should, when activated and held down (you have to hold it the whole time you are using it), lock both axles together, making them both spin. The front axle doesn't have a differential lock- the tire with the least resistance (traction) will spin. The uphill tires were spinning because weight had shifted to the lower side.
The thickness of the mud has little to do with it- the consistency, content, and tire condition has everything to do with whether you get stuck or not.
Welcome to OTT, by the way! Hope we can be of help.

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I just wanted to be sure that there wasn't a bigger problem. Luckily it's in spot that we will be able to pull it out without too much trouble if the ground doesn't dry out in a couple of days.

Both rears will spin when diff lock is engaged, but usually just one front.

FEL attached with no weight on the 3 pt hitch is asking for trouble of one sort or another... Just saying.

I don't disagree Bluegill, definitely not the ideal set up. It started as pretty much parallel to the grade and deteriorated from there...

If you could not get both rear wheels to spin by depressing the differential lock then you have a problem inside the rear differential.

I know how you feel, my b6200 sank to the axle on Saturday. It took 5 hours to dig it out with help from jacks and a come-a-long. My differential lock doesn't always depress all the way the first time I push on it.
