L3450 PTO Problems

Hi. I'm not a mechanical person so I will try to explain this the best I can. I inherited a L3450 tractor from my dad and am cutting the surrounding fields with a Bush Hog. This Bush Hog has a grade 2 shear bolt in it from Tractor Supply. Yet a lot of times it doesn't break when I run over something big and instead the PTO just stops working. When that happens I can turn the Bush Hog shaft around freely in either direction by hand which I understand you should not be able to do if things are working correctly. Once I waited a couple of days and the PTO just started working again for no reason. But often what has to happen is I get this guy to open the tractor, remove the hydraulic fluid, knock the internal PTO shaft a few times with a metal bar until it locks and stops turning freely and then put the fluid back in and close it up. Then it works. The Kubota repairman actually showed him how to do this. But why isn't the shear bolt breaking? Any ideas what is going on here? There has to be a better way.

You need to split it and replace the one way clutch and spring! ;)

The first time I brought it to the only guy within 60 miles who works on Kubotas he said he did put in a spring, but that he had to make it himself because he couldn't get the right one. But splitting a tractor...what does that mean? And is replacing the clutch expensive? The only thing I've ever split was a check in a restaurant....

When I pull it up by Serial Number it says it's and EC (ever clutch or what they call a wet), but the serial numbers don't always crossover correctly.
Does it say EC anywhere on it?

Both the EC and the GST have one way clutches in them, the DT does not.

If it is a DT it will have a 2 disk clutch, with 2 positions, 1st position controls the tractor movement, where the second disengages the PTO.

If it's a DT, you could be having issues with the clutches. or a host of other things.
The fact that the old owner was saying something about the spring (which is used in the EC and GST for the one way clutch would lend me to believe it's and EC.

With respect to shear pin not working...

Just a guess...
The parts could be rusted together rendering the pin useless.

The bolt was a little rusty...not too bad. I think I put it in last year.
It looks bent and slightly broken like it tried to break, but it didn't
do the job. It's a grade 2 that's pretty weak I think. This just makes
no sense.

It's not shearing because the one way clutch is failed, doesn't allow enough torque to get transferred to the PTO.

It's not too hard of a job to get in there and fix it.
You would split it in the rear between the clutch housing and the rear end.

Note: If you split it, replace the gaskets, it's very important on these models as they change the dimensions too drastically if you leave them out.
