L245 Stuck in Reverse

Hey guys,

I have an old L245 gear shift tractor I use as my main bush hogging tractor. Never had an issue with this guy until yesterday. I simply shifted it in to reverse to back up and now it will not shift out of reverse. I used all my strength and even tapped it with a hammer a little. No go. She is stuck good! Any ideas on where to start? This does not look like an easy repair. Thanks

It may be an easy repair. Sounds like the shifter is blocked inside. Unbolt and lift off the top cover and levers. You should be able to move the reverse gate back to center. Then, with all the gates in line, replace the cover with a couple screws and test shift it a few times to verify its ok. The box may just be getting older and needs to be shifted with a little less gusto . There's a related OTT thread here

Completely agree. Common problem with old tractor.

I found that a clutch that needs adjusting so it does not drag makes it more frequent.
Keep the wrench that fits the cover bolts on the tractor and soon you will be able to do it in the field in minutes.
