I have lost steering with my L225. If I spin the steering wheel to the left, it seems to raise up and I can see the threaded rod. Is it possible there is something under the steering wheel cover that has broken, a key or something, or is it more serious like a gearbox problem?

Somewhat a common problem on that series as well as others.

go to page 6 and you will see a exploded view of the steering
Once you get it apart - you will find out what "broke" - here is a place you can order the replacement parts.

I put the Kumar kit in my L2000 (Grey L225) and it is working out well. Good quality parts. Don't let your tractor sit out in the rain without something covering the steering wheel!
