Im in a very remote area of Alaska and the nearest road is 500 miles. My 40 yr old L225 tractor has run perfect for ever.It has sat for a year and when I started it up yeasterday the engine raced and had to pull the compression relief to stop it.Im a McGiver but not a engine mechanic.Any ideas how to fix or what wrong. No mechanics for 500 mile so im on my own to fix.All control linkages are free and clear.Throttle not stuck.Someone have any ideas for me?

There should be an inspection cover on the side of the injection pump. Just below where your throttle linkage ends at a little rocker arm.

Plate allows access to the fuel rail. Fuel rail is controlled by a spring that attaches to the rocker for the throttle linkage.

My guess is that injection rail is stuck. Had that same thing happen to my L1501 a few years ago. Sprayed some penetrating oil on the fuel rail, then was able to reach the fuel rail with a flat screw driver and work it back and forth to free it up. I then worked the hand throttle back and forth and made sure the fuel rail was moving accordingly.

After it was all said and done, I changed the oil to remove the penetrating oil.

No experience, but after the long dormant period I wondered fuel rail.
Thought that before I saw Daren’s message.
He is experienced, and betting on the right track.

Probably won't take much, just gummed up diesel on that fuel rail. Soak it as Daren suggested and save a 500 mile trip!!

Could always McGyver up some sort of throttle plate on the intake, right?

Seriously though...my bet is also on a stuck rack. Particularly after sitting. Normally some lubricant will fix it but not always, and if not, the only way is to remove the pump & disassemble it but you'll need to know exactly what you're doing. That's one of the things I dont mess with is injection pumps. They say they're pretty easy to deal with but I'm close to 7 foot, and my hands are way too big to mess with little bitty parts...so I send them out.

Yup, stuck "control" rack..
U can {sometimes} free it up as stated above..
BE CAREFUL w/ that screwdriver.!!
TO MUCH force will snap off the teeth on the gear segment..
So, move a little, spray, move IT BACK, spray, move it forward A LITTLE, spray..
U get the idea..
IF its an electric shut off, pull the wire & spin the engine after a few tries.. THAT will put the internals of the pump, in different positions that will help u out..
Same goes for a manual sh-off> pull it to sh-off & spin the engine..
Just don't let it start before u have the rack free..
Good luck.
