Picked this little guy up at my local scrap yard for $20. Can anyone help me figure the fuel system out on this motor? It trys to start if I mist it with starting fluid, but I can't get it to kick otherwise.
I attempted to bleed the injectors, and one spurts good, while the other kind of sweats. It's possible fuel just hasn't gotten to it yet. I would think it would still try to start on that one cyl though.

There was a little water in the fuel system as well, but it was mixed in with diesel.
Any tips or info/manuals, would be greatly apreciated. I don't want to have to replace the pump.

#1 DO NOT USE starting fluid on this engine you will, if not haven't already, damage it.

#2 Dump all the fuel and put good fuel with no water in it.

#3 Are you bleeding the lines that go to the injectors?

#4 Are you preheating the glow plugs?

I have used a little starting fluid, but only enough to hear the motor try to use it, which it did. What could happen if I use it excessively?

Is there a drain somewhere?

I've tried bleeding the injectors/lines but only one is spurting how it should.

I hold the glow plugs for 15 seconds before cranking.

Only takes one small shot of Ether to break piston rings, ring lands, lift the head off of the block and damage the gasket, bend rods, etc. Please don't ask how I know. This is especially true on small diesels....since diesels rely on heat by way of compression....the smaller the engine, the less air it ingests, so it's compression ratio has to be sky high. In order to get the compression ratio up high enough to create enough heat to start/run, things get really tight....between the piston and the cylinder head. Just a few thousandths of an inch. If that clearance opens up (bent rod)-even just a little- or the rings don't seal properly, it just won't run right-if at all.

Definition of "excessive" in this context is one shot, IMO.

On a side note, my dad was trying to "ether" his powerstroke 7.3 a while back and the glow plugs, being automatic, were "on"....he sprayed down the turbo's inlet tube and mom sitting in the cab turned the key on to start the engine, and the glow plugs ignited the ether...all of it...burned every single hair off of my dad's face and head. Dad's always worn a beard ever since I've known him so seeing him without it is kinda weird.

Well........it has perfect compression. The fuel system is primed, and the glow plugs work.....after a few minutes of cranking, the
Dam thing fired right up. Then up. Then up.......I flipped the kill switch and it wouldn't shut down. I wielded my trusty shop rag and suffocated it. I live in fear for what I have created.

Where might I find an exploded view? Or are they not complicated? I guess I wanna know, If I open the governor housing, are any parts prone to flying out? I can work with linkage, i can even custom make parts, unlike the pump where precision in a must.
