So I got this thing in a trade for an old klr650 I had. Replaced alternator and got the appropriate battery on it. Was working fine and then I noticed voltage wasn’t really appearing to move around showing it to be charging but always started with 11.5-12v. I started it up today rode around the property to a couple of spots and everything was good. The ol lady came home and we were gonna go on our nightly beer ride and nada. Just clicked. So I jump it off the truck and started to ride off to gate and noticed the volt meter depleting from 12 to 9 really fast so I go to turn off the bota and she wouldn’t shut off. Super stumped on this.

Voltage regulator built in alternator or separate? (Edit - it is separate)

You have VOM? If so - check battery voltage with engine off - should be higher than 12.5 , start and check again, should be pushing 14+

Something is killing the battery way too fast based on your description.

When you say "appropriate battery" - was that a new one? or known to be good one?

Looking at the diagram it shows to have the regulator built into the alternator. Which the alternator was new I bought in January this year as well as a brand new battery. I’ve got my dad putting the battery on charge so that I can try to get some readings this evening after work.
