Hi,

I recently purchased a 1985 Kubota L2850 with a loader and backhoe. While I love it so far, I have one concern: Is it knocking, or is the sound I hear normal for an '85 L2850 with 1356 hours on the clock? She crack-starts (off and running on first compression stroke!), has good oil pressure (52PSI at idle), very acceptable blow-by via the 'tea kettle' test, no water in the oil (hot manifold oil spread check) even compression when spinning it on starter with no fuel, properly adjusted tappets, and good power. I've uploaded a video of it starting, idling, running up to speed, and letting it idle. Take a look / listen and let me know if I might have a problem, or it is just fine! YouTube link is: http://youtu.be/K5wNdiFP_qA.

Thanks,
Dave Mahoney

Sounds exactly like my L3250 - which has the 1.9L liter version of the 1.7 in your rig. Nothing sounds unusual to me. These older engines were a little louder than the newer ones - no worries. Dick B

Thanks! Now I can sleep a bit better knowing I didn't buy an engine rebuild project!

Yup, sounds normal to me. The lope is a little longer than I'm used to hearing but that's an older engine so I wouldn't think it's unusual.
