I'm in the market for a 2501 with a backhoe. I'm totally at the limit of my budget and would like to not spend more for the extra HP. I have some hard clay dirt with areas of shale rock around my place and was wondering if the 2501 can dig hard dirt with a 12" bucket. Not looking for it to dig it like butter, just want to know if it can reasonably be done. Thanks for any input here.

Yes it will. My tractor just the previous series as the 2501, but has the same BH77 as the 2501. I have the 16” bucket and have no issues (hard clay here too). What type of work will you be doing?

It sure will. HP has nothing to do with it at all. Same backhoe (BH77) is used on B2650 thru L-01 series. L series has a bit more heft in the machine weight.

If you're digging clay, you may actually want a 16 inch bucket. If the clay is wet, it tends to stick more in a narrower (12") bucket.

I was tempted by the l2501 also. I ended up getting a B2650 instead with a cab and grapple. The B2650 has been able to make easy work of crap clay dirt that is mixed with tons of cobble rock.

I will be digging out stumps got some big and some small, digging trenches for coverts, modifying a dirt bike track but all that dirt has already been cut. Also, building a pond, but most of the hard cutting has already been done with an excavator, so mostly moving / placing rocks there. Basically light duty work. No big projects. Oh yeah also digging holes for planting trees.

It's basically hard clay with some shale rock. In the winter the clay digs pretty easy, its the shale rock that concerns me.
