Hi all,

I know it's been asked tons of times and I know it's been answered loads of times, but I still cannot find the engine code on our D950 engine. I searched every mentioned location (flat surfaced engine bit, near injection pump, manifold etc etc) but I can't find it. All numbers I could find are the ones on the photos.

Can anyone assist in finding the (bloody) engine code?

Thanks!

Why do you need to know?

Ok, so for a D950 there is no engine code.
There is a serial number, it's not the same as an engine code as it will not give you all the build parameters like an engine code would.

Your first and second pic's are the serial number
You need to clean it better and you'll see in the second pic that before the ( - ) will be D950 ( might or might not have a letter ) and after the ( - ) will be 5 digits (that's the serial number).

The third pic is 927 cc ( Cubic Centimeter size of the engine), not really any help to you.

D950 came in mutiple versions:

The D950-A, and D950-B which are both useable to you.
The differences between those 2 versions are very minor.

The D950-BG1 is the industrial light / generator engine that you do not want, but not the end of the world if you got one, you would just need to swap out the Governor and linkage to make it a variable speed engine.

Thanks @North Idaho Wolfman !

In short: Because I'd like to know ;)

No, it's mainly for parts. I'm in the middle of extensive maintenance (history unknown) and I now need/want to replace the copper injector rings which go in the block. Since this motor has the bigger injectors (with 14mm ID and 20/21mm OD rings) all shops and stores always want to know the engine code. Therefor I was searching and couldn't find it. That intrigued me so I started to doubt myself that I couldn't find it and now I really wanted to know it. So that got me wanting to know it. You say it doesn't have that much requested number. Does that say anything about the type of engine this is? I think it says B on it, so a D950 B engine is the 'obvious' assumption and I don't need to look for any other numbers hidden somewhere deep behind engine parts?

Ok for information sakes:
Here goes:
ALL D650, D750, D850, D950's take almost all of the same parts.
Same injectors, same glow plugs, same injection pumps.
There was very little variance between all the models.

Some of the specific parts differences:
The block (as the bore size changed)
Heads (valves are different)
Cylinder liners, pistons, rings.
Water management parts, like Thermostat housing, water pump, and front gear case cover.
Oil pans and pickup tube ( just a use difference not a fit difference )
Flywheel and Front pulley ( again not a fit difference just a use difference )

But for the most part you can pretty much throw a dart blindfolded at D(X50) parts and hit ones that work for your engine.

Now parts from other similar lettered and numbered engines will NOT work, D902, D905, and other D (three cylinder) engines.

Now the only number on that engine that is of any use is the stamped number beside the injection pump.
The D950B-XXXXX is the engine (serial number).
And that number would be the only number of any use to any parts guy.
