Hi all,
First post - hope this is allowed here. I bought a used Kubota BX2670. Not sure of the year but it has 300 hours on it. When we bought it the first time I went to start it it wouldn't turn over. Dealer came out, said there was a loose wire on the starter and that was supposed to fix it. IT worked off and on. It's been a year now and it usually starts after some waiting but now it doesn't turn over at all except sporadically. It makes no difference if you jiggle wires, push connections, whatever. Last weekend it died when my wife was loading some gravel. She came in, said the tractor wouldn't start. I could see her trying to get it started but no luck. I went out later and it fired right up. All I did was turn the key.

I've checked for loose connections. The PTO lever is in the right position. It has 1/2 tank of fresh diesel. The battery is showing 12 volts. When I turn th key, the dash lights come on, and you can hear clicking, but the starter doesn't even try to engage. Other times, it fires right up. I'm baffled by the intermittent state of the problem. It's got to be electrical but I don't know what could be causing this or how to troubleshoot. I checked all the safety switches under the seat and they were all connected. If anybody has any ideas I would be really grateful. I'm stumped. Thanks!

It sounds like a fault in the safety switch system. There are probably 100s of threads on this site talking about how to troubleshoot your system.

How mechanically and electrically inclined are you?

step one: get the wiring diagram from the WorkShopManual( WSM) !
step two: print the diagram a few times and grab a marker to 'follow the electrons' for 'start' . Usually this involves keyswitch--->safety switches---> starter relay--->starter. There's probably a fuse involved.

FYI there isn't a 'one wiring for all tractors'. Black is ground, wht/blk generally is the 'start' wire on the starter solenoid.

Maybe others will chime in with information pertaining to what I am going to post since my knowledge is only skin deep! Many people here are "born to fix."

I don't know how similar your BX2670 is to my BX23D, but I (and others here) experienced intermittent starting, too. After mine started, re-starting wasn't a problem so this may not help you.

BUT, there were lots of reports of poor starting being corrected by installing a relay on the starter. Apparently, the voltage was too low to allow the starter to engage. And, it didn't happen every time. I think Henro was one of the ones I have followed since he and I have similar machines. He gave good info and I jumped right in to follow his instructions. Anyway, once I installed the relay, the little jewel has started every time.

Again, I hope someone who knows something will enter this thread to give more info. I didn't check the voltage drop when I tried to start but after reading about the problem, it seemed that was my problem and with the low cost of the part and the ease to install, it was worth the shot. And, I'm happy I did. The relay was about $15 on ebay. Sad to say, it was for a JD! I didn't let my tractor know that. :)

Hope you get it fixed. It's annoying when you're ready to work but your tractor isn't!

Thank you all for the suggestions and information. Looks like I'm about to develop a deep relationship with my multimeter. : )

Here are a few threads on the search (title only) of “no crank” on this site.
