Intermittent Difficulty Shifting. Something Broken or Normal?

I just bought a B1750, gear transmission, 400 hours. When shifting, I occasionally cannot get it into certain gears. For example, shifting from first to third. I can get into first and reverse, but not second or third. Another time I cannot get into first or reverse, or just reverse, or all the gears except the one I shifted out of.

If I let the clutch out, and push it back in, I can grind my way into the desired gear or I will now be able to shift into different gears.

Is this normal or is something off? Shift fork? Ground gears?

I second NIWs thought - tighten up on the ol' clutch linkage a few notches

99.9% HIW & 95Hokie are right.

On mine, I put in a new clutch about 2 yrs ago and the linkage is properly adjusted, (adjusted it last week). Sometimes mine just dos not want to go into gear -rarely but it does. When this happens I let the clutch out - with shift in neutral - burp the foot throttle, push the clutch in and put just a small amount of pressure on the stick (not enough to grind) and 99.9% of the time it will slide right into gear. Just like double clutching an oooooolld truck.:D

This is exactly what is happening to me, just more frequent than seems normal. If it does, the double clutching like thing fixes it.

I was not thinking clutch adjustment because it does not grind unless I double clutch and make it grind.

Anyone know why or how the clutch adjustment will help?

any mechanical clutch needs tweaking....as the components wear - the take up is needed to make the throwout bearing release as it did when new. Look at the linkage and see what take up is allowed - might not need to hit it too hard with adjustment, in your manual - it should tell you "free play" - or how much give the pedal has BEFORE is starts the movement. Most have about a 1/2" or so of play.
betcha NIW will show you a diagram of what to look for ...and his magic yellow pen will lead the way !!:D:):)

On my old l1501, it will refuse to go into first or second gear every now and then. What I found is if I'm really getting after it with moving dirt, the transmission will slip slightly out of alignment for the shift fork. If I move the shifter over towards reverse and then push towards the front of the tractor, it moves everything back into the correct position :p Not really wanting to dive into the tranny this second, but with it being 35 plus years old, the bearings and bushings are sure to have some wear

I agree with the others about adjusting the free play on the clutch. Mine was hard to shift in all gears when I first got it. Adjusted the clutch and that helped quite a bit :) If I remember not to try and move a mountain all at once, it usually doesn't give me any trouble :D

Alright, clutch adjustment time it is. By all means NIW lead the way!

In a related question, anyone have any idea how to adjust the clutch on this thing? I know I know, RTFM (or buy in this case).
