Grandson had several pictures of this buck on trail camera and had seen him a couple of time that did not work out for a shot, but everything worked this morning.

Magic - - -

Congrats to your grandson!

Wow - - nice animal. Seen some awesome BIG bucks up here this year.

One was 214 pounds dressed. Makes for a ~270 pound deer on the hoof....that's enormous, but he was corn fed....just ask the corn farmer that took the pic.... ;) He himself got a super 150 pounder dressed, which is still very good sized. Years ago, we figured 115 pounds dressed was average, but most were 1.5 years old. Your grandson's deer looks 3.5 years old or so...not a youngster.

Often figure a southern deer runs smaller than a northern version. That looks like a big-bodied buck for MS.

Oh, nice tall rack too....our family always said antlers were inedible. Never had a buck mounted; wasn't our purpose for hunting, but that one belongs on a wall!! ;)

Thank you. He and I share much together since his dad has not been in his life for over 10 years.

Ha, that's funny. I looked at the time stamp on the pictures and see that the first that he sent me was taken at 8:22, and the last was taken by his buddy at 11:00. Dang deer had been lying on it's ear for 2 1/2 hours.

He also needed a strong back friend to help him get it out.

Hunting related rather than hunting, but I was watching some elk yesterday afternoon. I took this photo from the house. The elk were on the hill behind the house enjoying the afternoon sun. There are three in this photo but could be more hiding in plain sight. :giggle:

Is that your actual reticle? If so must be FFP, correct? What power and how you like to use in low light for hunting? Is it Illuminated? If not does it need to be for hunting? (If not would it be useable on a black bear?) I have FFP on my long range target rifles but they are almost helpless with out the illuminated reticle with such fine lines if zoomed out with a bigger field of view. I wonder about it as I like to make the jump to my hunting rifles but not sure I will be happy.

It's the tactical milling reticle (TMR) in an older Leupold Mark 4 spotting scope that's 10x-40x. It is a FFP model with a milrad reticle which is my preference.

I prefer FFP mil/mil with illuminated reticles but have hunted with SFP non-illuminated for years. One of my favorite hunting setups is a Zeiss Conquest MC 3-9x with an RZ600 reticle. It's SFP non-illuminated but the holdovers in the reticle are perfect on 7.5x for my .375 H&H. I shot a mule deer at 465 yards with that set up. Shot twice, hit him twice and dropped him where he stood. Montana allows illuminated reticles for hunting, but not "light gathering" aids. You might need to check your state laws.

Honestly, if that Zeiss had an illuminated reticle it'd make the perfect hunting scope for me. I have five of those Zeiss scopes with RZ600 or RZ800 reticles.

But for you and black bear, I'd want something like a 1-8x FFP or 1-10x FFP that offers an illuminated reticle and possibly a dot on lower magnification ranges. I run an Aimpoint red dot on my suppressed .300 Blackout AR15 full-auto SBR with a Vortex 3X magnifier that flips over. It's a great setup for 0 to 300 yards and subsonic or supersonic ammunition. That arrangement could also work well on a bolt action rifle set up for close hunting where a wide field of view in low light conditions is beneficial.

A neighbor asked me to catch some beavers that were felling trees onto his fences. The beavers are tolerated as long as they stay in the fenced area around the pond. About every 3 years some of them wander out & do what beavers do. I’ve caught 4 over the last 2 days.

Oh my…tell me more…that doesn’t look like my dads single shot. Whatchya got there?
I think that's one of those "turktical" shotguns. :ROFLMAO: Rock Island Armory VR80 .... oops. One of those in 20 Gauge would be awesome.
