How to check a hydro trans when buying a used tractor?

I am looking at a Kubota b7100 with 800 hrs and front end loader. I know it has issues with the steering box, but I want to ensure the hat trans is in good condition. What would be the best way to check it? Check the color and smell of fluid? Run it until hot and watch for weaknesses?

That is a great question!
I'm not really sure - but on mine I just checked that it would shift high to low, in and out of 4 wheel assist, move forward and back, and return to neutral without creeping either direction.
The fluid should be very clear - not amber.
Noise may help but it is subjective without a good reference tractor to compare to.

B7100's HST's are not prone to failure, especially at 800 hours.

Run it, if it's sounds good, and it pulls good, then it's probably good to go. ;)

See if they will let you move somthing heavy or dig into some dirt?

Unless they abused it, 850h is still young.
