My '85 needs a new block heater. The p/n for the original is 70090-02841, but a quick search shows it was replaced by 70000-73274.

I purchased the latter, but it doesn't fit. The original appears to have an adapter that goes through the air filter mounting bracket and into the head. The adapter looks pretty crusty and I am worried about it breaking off.. Before proceeding, does anyone have any recommendations? I have it soaking in PB Blaster now, but heck.. it could be the wrong size too.

Thanks guys.

If you use the glow-plugs for the FULL 90 seconds, you should not need engine-heater. Also, it does not hurt to REglow in subzero temps. (test all three glowplugs and snug the nuts to ensure full current to each one.)

However, if you REALLY wish to preheat the engine.... there are other ways to do it. For those REALLY cold starts, have you considered one of those magnetic stick-on heaters? Just stick it to the crankcase to warm the oil.

A block-heater should only be plugged in for a couple hours before starting engine. Leaving plugged in will make your electric bill go thru the roof and burn it out.

Also, if you regularly start your G5200 in subzero temps, make sure you are running 5w40 oil in the crankcase. (Rotella T6 is one of the BEST oils you can run all year long in your D600.)

I assume you are treating your fuel to prevent gelling....

Thanks.

I will have to retry the glow plugs at 90 seconds.

My '90 came with all the owners manuals and also the installation instructions for the original p/n of block heater. It specifically says not to run over 2 hours. It was about 30*F last weekend and it was plugged in for no more than 20 minutes. The gauge read about 3/4 of the way to operating temperature and the engine fired right up. I would have been fiddling with it otherwise. Overall, the engine just started easier and the first few seconds of operation were smooth. Sounds like you don't ever use one then?

Oil wise, I am currently running Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck (5w40) and a Fram PH7317 filter.

Post a picture of what you currently have and the one you ordered.

I'm thinking you have the wrong model.

Top view of the crusty adapter on the '85. (Front of engine.)

Below air filter housing bracket with adapter and block heater.

Parts list for original kit. Kit included adapter and element. Came with my '90. Appears identical to what's on the '85.

The kit I bought. It's too large to fit into the adapter, which makes me wonder the adapter just needs removed from the head.

I ditched the Kubota part and bought a 3/4" NPT thread block heater from AutoZone for $15.

Also, the adapter was like a freeze plug. I had originally thought it was threaded.

I see this thread is a bit old but I am thinking now about to upgrade my G5200 (EU version) with a heater.
The one you referred at Messick's clearly states that it will not fit into the G5200 however an eBay auction sells one under several p/n's like you wrote. Seems like all should be identical.
BTW could you share which one you gone for at Autozone ? Does it fit correctly ? And what is you experience after several hours of usage ?

BTW, the Kubota 70000-73274 is just a repackaged Zerostart 2204320 kit. it's a 1" NPT 400W heater. The Zerostart is $35 less than Kubota wants for it.
Mine already had the adapter going thru the air filter housing with a broken heater element in it, the actual heater is 1" NPT. Fit my G5200 perfect!
