Back on the hinge while waiting for parts

Mixed acetone with trans fluid, apply with brush, hit hinge with torch

If chinese gaskets make it: make progress on engine

Still don't know why both starters are doing the same manner like the video posted earlier

If everything is lubed, try this. Connect the (-) cable to the block or starter mounting bolt, then touch the (+) to the stud on top with the braided wire going to it, that should bump your starter. Forget about the signal wire for this test.

This statement could be on to something

"Braided wire going to it" is ground, correct?

In my head, this is connecting positive and negative and causing a short

Or am I incorrect?

Summary: work on hinge, figure out why both starters won't spin, and get gaskets to continue reassembly of block

Woah look at this: chinese gasket kit for $100, ordered on Monday from China, got here today (Thursday)

Now: forgot about the hinge, get back to engine assembly

Installed oil pump: put gasket on, got it into proper place, put in long bolts,then short bolts, then looked at diagram, put in the small key, then placed gear with protruding end facing front of tractor

Put gears and their hardware on not too tight in case I make mistake

Rubber mallet pushing fuel gear into its place

Got gears in with matching numbers

But forgot the bolt keepers

Take gears out, get in the bolt keepers, tighten bolts, put gears back in properly with matching numbers

Took idle gear back out, put in bolt keepers for both idle and camshaft gears, using chisel to lock bolts in

About to hammer in crank gear using 2 inch pvc



I Installed the oil pump gear facing right way, correct?

I point: 1 mark on crank gear

Now: twist crankshaft to make 1 point up, then put in idle gear making all 3 marks match

Got the markings to match, look closely you can see them

Positive battery cable goes to the large lug next to the trigger wire. The ground cable goes to the engine block not the starter. You have the ground lead going to the stud that takes power from the solenoid to the starter motor.

Setup of how I matched gears

Put clamp on crank, rotated to match 1 marking with idle gear, then adjusted marking 2 and 3 gears by hand, then hit idle gear with mallet pushing it into rest of gears


Now: finish up rest of hardware, hand spin it, then spin it with starter

Gear - small collar - big flat ring - small rubber seal - big thick collar - oil seal

Do I have them right?

Put in the locking rings, hit oil pump bolt with compressed air impact, hammered on bolt keeper

Top right ring, camshaft, is a bit loose, tried tightening it,

the top left gear, fuel camshaft, has the same ring on both sides?

How I installed this area: first long collar, gear protruding toward back of tractor, then locking ring, same ring as front gear

Hit everything with compressed air, soaked all bearing areas and gears with diesel, spun by hand, spins fine, now spin it with starter

Is there a timing mark on that gear? If so the gear would need to be installed to the side you can see that. If not, Id think your original video from disassembly would be correct.

No timing mark on that gear

Interesting, you would follow how it was assembled even if it is different than diagram

Later on: I can further disassemble that component and see how the gears line up both ways

That last picture in last post: from August 17 when I was disassembling the area: clearly gear facing front of engine

Parts showed up for other engine: main bearings include thrust, 3 seals to seal up crankshaft assembly, gearcase gasket

Notice this main seal matches the size of the original

Hydraulic gear problem solved

I try to show you in these two pictures, that the gear it connects to is further to the front of block, and the hole inside that component is deep

Meaning, @Workerbee is 100% correct, that i assembled it properly, and that the diagram can be wrong

Putting on hydraulics, looked around diagram, matched all bolts and washers

Cleaning sealing area with piks, files, compressed air, diesel

Installed hydraulic filter using proper hardware per diagram

Stuck now on governor spring, look back at pictures, look up close on videos, try to see how they install the spring

I study this diagram and look at old videos to figure out spring situation

Looked up the springs: 140 is tiny spring, 150 bigger spring

Brought gearcase and other throttle parts to try to understand the assembly

I wish they show how the little spring goes (140), bigger spring I might understand it

Authentic gesture of solidarity with Joe is worth more than words could ever be. I'm behind Joe all the way and if I were physically capable I'd be right up there beside him instead. I know,I know you're thinking I'm making up excuses for not doing as I say do but let me explain. I have a neighbor who is amongst the best of motivators came to me in some of my darkest hours. Once when I had lost all hope he showed me a light at the end of the tunnel. I was so elated I rushed to meet it. Unfortunately it was a freight train. I still had hope and one day I felt another man had treated me unfairly. My neighbor persuaded me to withhold judgement until I had walked a mile in his moccasins. I was bite numerus times by his moccasins on that mile walk,almost died and never fully recovered.

Undeterred I vowed to plow up turf in my yard to allow full appreciation for Joe's floor but my wife threatened me if I followed through. She said if I messed our yard up she would divorce me and have her dad revoke the trust he set up that allows our lavish lifestyle. Big hats and new trucks mean less than dedication to friends but squandering life with a woman 40 years younger than me is too much to bear.

Is the smaller spring right?

I knew I should have taken more closeups before disassembly

I try to follow the diagram where it goes from one to the other,

I'll keep tinkering with it once I get back to the shop

Oh I see, they want that smaller spring on the front hook, not the back hook

In the picture, that spring is in the wrong area, it needs to be up front

0 chance I can figure it out without these diagrams

I am using that little line next to 140 to understand the way they want it

I have since curved in the ends to make it hold better

In the meantime I let it marinate and get more parts ready for reassembly

Realized I can go on with the gearcase reassembly

Pushed in collar with pvc, then pushed in key with back of chisel

Taking off gearcase oil seal: spray diesel, torch the area lightly, push out using back of chisel

Took out seal, hit lightly with round file, wipe down

Pushed in chinese seal, smack flat piece of flat steel with sledgehammer to push down evenly

Wet sanding bumps in liner with 1000 grit, spray diesel

Gave entire block and gearcase hard hits with compressed air, then part cleaner

Linear lines on all 3 liners

Before closing engine, hitting everything hard with cleaners to get rid of all whatever

Hit also crank and oil pan area pointing upward

BTDT.. 100s of gas engines...from COX049s to BBV8s, though no diesels, well, 1... for an RC Airplane I once built.

I also have designed/built a LOT of electronics from crystal radios to optical emission spectrometer data acquistions computers to remote controlled energy management systems, hand soldering everything or wire wrapping.

Current project is to make a towable, small scale rotary soil trommel. something the BX23S can tow, then use tractor to load the hopper. While not as 'complicated' as an engine rebuild ,it's more challenging.

Installed gearcase

Put grease on o rings, stuck them on gearcase

Didn't forget about o ring on water pipe

Put grease on edge of gearcase, stuck gasket on it

Placed gasket in position, went and made sure o rings didn't move, smack gasket into block



Now: look at diagrams, organize hardware, fasten gasket to engine

Looked at diagram, figured out bolts to secure gear case

Put rest of parts on, cut scrap paper and tape areas that don't need paint

Put thick coat of paint
