Equipment
B2650, FEL With QA 60"mmm, 3pt FDR1672,homemade ballast box, BB 1572 box scraper
For those of you that know me, and the new people that dont, I have been around all types of equipment for 40 plus years. With that being the case, at some point every piece of equipment will have a problem, whether it is mechanical, or electrical, or something else. I was out mowing out back with my B2650 and FDR 1672 rear finish mower, when the tractor just shut off like you turned the key off. Just mowing grass, and not brush. My tractor is 4 yrs old with 1050 plus hrs on it. Got off and looked the tractor over everywhere including underneath with out seeing any problem. I was really perplexed at this point as I really maintain all of my equipment. When I turned the key to try and start it, there nothing, not even anything on the LCD panel on the dash. The only light that came on was the light for the glow plugs. Next step was to check the fuses. The OPC 5 amp fuse was blown. At least a place to start. There was a spare fuse in the box. Replaced the fuse with the new one, turned the key on, and it blew immediately. Not good. Getting late, so I decided to unhook the mower and have my buddy come over and help me tow its up to my shop with the 4 wheeler. Got it put in my shop and would look at it in the morning. I had bought the WSM when I bought my tractor as I do for every piece of equipment I buy. In the mean time, helping out at my local Kubota dealer, I called one of the mechanics to see where to start looking. He said it was probably one of the safety switches that are tied in to the OPC panel. The next morning checking the WSM, they had a table to ohm check the 4 safety swithes. Located and unplugged the 4 safety switches and checked the all according to the table and they all checked good. Again not good, because I now have an intermitten electrical problem. Next step I plugged the switches in one at a time with a new OPC fuse in, and nothing blew. When I got them all plugged back in, turned the key on, all the LCD panel lights came on and the tractor started right up. Again good but not good. I played with all of the safety switches, cycling everything on and off and nothing failed. I then backed out the garage and went back and forth a few times and it quit again. I was pretty sure at this point it was the HST safety switch. Went out to the dealer and got one for I think was $39.00. Put the new switch in and adjusted it, and the tractor has been fine ever since. When I got the old switch out and compared it to the new one, it was not smooth and notchy feeling. Playing with it out and the ohm meter hooked up I could get it to fail every once in a while. So now I am back in the game. Pretty cheap fix for 4 yrs and 1050 plus hrs. So maybe this will help someone down the road.
As a little fun side note, I road my Harley down to West Virginia to see my son and do some riding with him, a 1300 mile trip, on my 2003 FLHTC Harley with 96000 miles on it the same week. On the way back, I lost all of my gauges on the dash, so couldnt tell if I had oil pressure or a charging sytem. Checked the fuses on it, and the gauge fuse was blown. Put a new one in, turned the key on and it blew immediately. Went to an auto parts store and bought a couple of tools to pull the outer fairing off out in the parking lot, expecting to see something bare or melted, and couldnt find anything wrong. Feeling good enough that everything else was working, I drove it the last 3 hrs home. Long story short, it ended up being the neutral switch on my Harley also. What are the odds of that, 2 different machines in one week with bad neutral switches!!
