The birds are off to the processor before the sun came up this morning. 29 total. 8 weeks and 5 days. Will have total cost per lb after pick up. Everything is washed, sanitized and put away for the next batch.

No weights but this batch averaged out to $22.00/bird. Now they chill. Tomorrow they get vacuum packed and frozen. Can I get them cheaper? Maybe but I enjoy the 8wks. For reference a 4 lb chicken at my local grocery is $11.00. Now if you step it up to pasture raised prices range from 30-90 a bird. Crazy

They loose money on everyone but make up for it in quantity . Costco does the same thing to draw in customers that buy profitable items also.

What helped wake me up was an 11 year old child who did a TED talk about our food system. In his closing, he said "You can either pay your farmer now, or you can pay your doctor later"

That is how they do that.

Lose a little on each sale of a particular item, but make up for it on other things……

It's all part of the marketing system for grocery stores. Offer a product most people need/want at a discounted price to get them in the store. Then notice the meat is in one corner, bread in another, milk on the other side of the store.... all to get the customer to make a trip through other isles were they invariably put other item into their cart. Then all the crap one just can't resist while waiting to check out.

Our local grocery has a tag line of “everything you need” I amended it and add and nothing you want. Fitting. On the rotisserie chickens, they are tasty but give us an uncooked bird for the price and you will get a 3lb bird raised fast. All bone and minimal meat

Final bird post. The ones we left whole weighed out 9+lbs. Wife is not too happy. She had to get creative getting them in to the vacuum freezer bags. Definitely will be sending them to processing a week earlier. I picked a good day to go in to the office.
