CaveCreekRay & RCW mentioned Estwing hammers in the Cast Iron Thread. I am a big fan of these tools. I had an uncle who was "Handyman to the Stars" and when I was about five, I was "helping" him pound nails in scrap lumber. I missed, and damaged his wood handle hammer. He was very understanding & forgiving, and gave me an old Estwing hammer. (that I couldn't hurt)
Been a fan ever since.
I currently own a blue handle & a green handle rip hammer, a hatchet, a camp axe, and their Geological Gad Bar. (best small digging bar on the planet)

I've heard from some pro framers that they don't like them because the handle transmits too much shock/vibration to the user- I've never found that to be the case, but I'm no pro, either.

Used an Estwing for about 10 minutes years ago.......I'll take a wooden handle hammer any day - nice tool, well made but does vibrate badly !

I bought it for the 5th wheel, so weight & bulk were a major factor in sizing. It is a little light compared to a full size axe, and the edge seems to be decent. Not as good as a competition axe by any means, but probably better than a True Temper or like axes. For chopping around the 5th wheel camp, or when I go Rhino camping, (pic) it can't be beat for it's size. I like the geometry & thin head, handles very light & accurate. Handle is nice & "grippy". Decent hammer also.
Great tool if you don't expect full size, full weight performance.

Anyone know a good source for replacement wooden handles? Got a large ball pein hammer and my 4lb flogging hammer that I busted the handles on several weeks ago. No one in town carries replacement wooden handles for them :mad:

I know what you mean- I'm a lot better than I used to be, but lately I have been on the lookout for these- sold under the Stanley, Roughneck, & Vaughn. The fiberglass/plastic handles appear unbreakable. (at least so far)
