Diesel leak M6030

Hello all,

New owner here, just picked up a 1990 M6030 yesterday. After driving it home I noticed a small diesel leak on the side of the diesel filter, attached photos of where I think the leak is. Overnight I collected a 100-200 mL into a container so doesnt seem like a large leak or possibly this is just all that could flow out of the system.

Is the leak coming from a perished gasket, and if so can anyone provide some guidance on the part I am looking for to replace?

As a start I suggest you replace the copper washers on the banjo style fitting.

GASKET, COPPER 15471-96650 $1.62 each two needed.

These washers should be replaced or annealed every time the fitting is touched.

The copper washer hardens when the fitting is tightened and when reused cannot conform to the small imperfections it is intended to seal.

Automotive supply places likely have a suitable washer.

You can try simply tightening the bolt a bit - don't break it!! If you wish you can try annealing the existing washers and perhaps save a trip to the auto shop. If you buy new washers be sure they're copper, not steel. Steel is too hard and won't conform.

As suggested, replace the washers.. in the meantime, turn off the fuel at the tank..
If u look at the "path".. that fuel has to travel up/down thru the supply pump.. not good, that supply pump should only allow fuel to flow thru when running..
The valves in the s.p. may be bad also.??
Thats what it looks like to me anyway..
If AFTER u replace the 2 inlet washers & u find that its leaking from the large washer BELOW the other 2.. let me know, I have some..

What is in the pan looks like antifreeze not diesel to me. Might be just the way it shows in the picture but just verify you are chasing the correct system.

Russell, he's in Australia and they may not dye their off road fuel. I thought the same (about antifreeze) when I saw the picture.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I'll get some new copper washers first and see if that seals it up. Is there a torque I should use with a torque wrench when tightening, or just tighten to feel?

Yes it's definitely diesel, here in Western Australia our diesel is that colour.

Just feel.. as far as I know..
Dont forget, if u tighten the snot otta it, theres no more "crush".. so go snug & check it.. U can always go more..
I just saw your location.. I guess that rules out me sending u that pump copper gasket.. lol

Very easy to soften work hardened copper sealing washers. To 'anneal' (soften them, heat them to red hot and allow them to cool. I use the wife's stove top electric element, just lay the washers on the element, turn it on, let it get it get red hot and turn it off and let it cool. Presto, soft again.

I hadn’t bothered to look at your location and even if I had I did not know that diesel was any other color except here in the USA it is dyed red if sold for off road (less tax) use.

Is that the Australian regular or off road (if you have that) color?

The fuel taxes in Australia are very different than here in mainland US, so there may not exist a need to identify fuel seperately.

Hi All,
Just an update on the resolution for this one. In the end it was a small crack in the fuel delivery line from the diesel filter to the injection pump. A previous owner had tried to do a dodgy repair with epoxy and it was flaking off. My neighbor and I removed the line, had it brazed up, and now shes all good.
