The fan has a viscous clutch assembly. Oil, typically a silicone oil, increases in viscosity and also thru a thermal switch starts to drive the fan at increasing speeds as the air flowing over it heats up. Think of it as an automatic transmission torque converter which responds to temperature.

This is done to minimize noise and power loss.

I have a cooling problem. The fan does not speed up when the tractor heats. I cleaned out the sensor on the fan drive. Nothing changed. Does the metal on the front of the drive connect to the 3 sensors under it

Not sure if it does or not, I've never tried to repair one, I just replace it when it goes bad. ;)
