Mounting my mower deck today to start mowing season, it was very difficult to get the lever fully engaged. It's always been a little tough, but today I didn't think I was going to get it on. Is there something that i might be missing with greasing that might cause this, or is there another cause?

Use more grease, and spray the coupling outer ring with penetrating oil so it slips back smoothly and the balls move freely. Dirt is the enemy of any PTO coupling.

I have the rear tires up on a few 2x2's and work from the rear and everything is cleaned and lubed.

Do you put any grease on the shaft, or is it all done on the coupling side?

I put a rubber glove on and give both the shaft and coupling a good coating of grease. Remove the one glove and install the shaft. Give the zerk fitting a five second shot of grease.
