Hello,

New to the forum and hoping for some help. A year or so ago I purchased a 2005 BX2230 with a belly mower. The temp gauge stopped working a while back but I checked coolant periodically and all seemed well. Was mowing yesterday and all was well until the engine bogged down and smoked black and died. Opened the hood and immediately noticed the belt was torn up and off the pulleys. So it wasn't getting any coolant flow at all and was very hot. I let it sit as I had to go to work shortly after. Today the engine starts up normally and idles and will rev up, that all sounds normal but I now have a knocking sound. I'm hoping there is no damage to the head or head gasket. My very amateur inspection doesn't yield much. Oil looks fine, no evidence of coolant in there but it wasn't getting any coolant at the time anyway. I don't see any evidence of leaks around the head but that might not mean anything. Does anyone have any ideas of what to look for. I'm open to trying to work on it myself but have little experience with engines. I'll take it to a pro if I have to.

Thanks for any assistance you can give!

Mcramlet,
First - Welcome to the forum. Great place to get info!

The overheat will cause severe problems with the head and or block as you well know. The really bad news is the knocking. That sounds as if you have a piston bearing gone or a crank bearing that has given up the ghost.

Since you are not savy in engines - I would take it to a diesel mechanic you trust. The news may be bad - but I will tell you this, it may very well be worth it to get it running again.

How many hours on machine?

Can you spin alternator and or water pump pulley by hand?

You will probably find that at least one piston seized in the bore and scored the block. When it cooled, the piston shrank back enough that it will move again. I am pretty sure that when the cylinder head is removed you will have a severely scored cylinder bore.

I haven't had a chance to check the alternator or water pump but will take a look as soon as I can. Thank you

If I remember correctly the machine is close to 1500 hours. Would you consider that something worth having repaired or look for a replacement entirely? I hate the thought of having to replace the whole machine but don't want to throw money away either.
