I have been told I can just replace the filter on the rear end of the tractor with very little fluid loss?

The oil in the back of the tractor looks good and clean. But the filter looks like it has been on there awhile. Thought I might just replace it? Then just top off what I loose?

While I am at it.

My neighbor is a Kubota owner, he works his tractors pretty hard.
He advised Rotella 15W40 in my engine.

I plan to use the tractor to haul wood from the barn all winter, one or two trips a week. Would I be better off going 10W30 for the winter? My manual doesn't even mention 15W40 (2001 BX2200).

I really don't want a list of 1000 other oils, or their benefits. I would just like your option on these weights.

Seeing that this tractor is new to you and you have no history of the servicing that's been done I would probably dump the hst oil and remove the screen to check for junk in it. We use the Kubota udt in the hst and shell 10/30 in the motor.
