Before spending the money on a radiator replacement or repair, I'd find out what the damage to the engine is. The oil and smoke was not from the radiator, though it could well be a thrown rod that punched a hole in the engine case - that should be discernable by a visual inspection.
The mechanic said he wouldn't look at the engine till the rad was fixed. I think I'm going to get a man friend to phone and talk to him about it . The mechanic sounded very young

I hate to say it, but sadly I think you've done damage to the engine getting it that hot.
On these engines the most common damage is a cracked head.

I cannot see any (major) oil in the area of the glow plugs and injectors. All the dust is still there.

Check the glow plugs, replace if required and get your engine started and see if it runs properly.

If yes, fix the radiator. We know that it is burst and there would be a bang and a lot of smoke the way you described it.

If not, Wolfman is right and you have to decide about the engine repair.

Please report back here.

Thank you for all the advice. It's a hard decision to fix or part with it, my own ignorance that caused the damage. I think I'll contact the manager on Monday. The dealer is about an hour away so not inclined to just pop in for a face to face.

@rag
Please take some pictures of the lower sides of the engine and of the damage of the radiator and post them here.

I don’t see any oil or damage in those pictures. But you couldn’t see a cracked head in a picture, and overheat the engine is likely to cause it to crack.

Ask your friend to evaluate the situation and make suggestions on how to proceed (if they are mechanically inclined!). Does the engine rotate a full 360 degrees, by hand? Does it make strange noises when being rotated? What does the oil look like (should be black)? I might even try to start it and let it run for a few seconds but that is “risky”, but you don’t have much to lose really.

There are Canadian members that might be able to help if they are close, but “Canada” is a large area to cover!

You may want to consider taking it to some mower repair shop or an auto shop and pay them for an hour of time to evaluate your mower for repair or parting it out/selling it.

The mower is at the dealer , an hour away.
Before talking to the dealer I went to 6 different rider mower repair places around here and phoned several others, non would touch a diesel motor tractor. . didn't want to even asses it. There are 2 dealers here both an hour away, I sent it to the one we bought it from.
There are 2 diesel truck repair places near by that I'm going to phone on Monday . They are both relativly small buisnesses and might consider doing it.
I'm going to try and send all these posts to a friend that is pretty good at motors.
I really appreciate the input and suggestions
I live in the center of Canada, about an hour north of the boarder
