The internet images of the exhaust sometimes appear to be forward on my B7200 especially when shown with a mower deck. When I bought it, it came upward and with a longer tailpipe. I moved it forward, but the tailpiece sticks out way too far, and the clamp was tightened so much that this piece is crimped and thus jammed on the muffler.

I would like it positioned forward to cut grass around trees. However, to do so, I will need to exert considerable effort to remove the long pipe.

Is there any reason I shouldn't position it forward before I go through the trouble?

Does it currently blow back into your face as you drive forward (exhaust in horizontal direction)?
If so, I would put it vertical

If you have a lot of limbs that are going to knock it off when it is vertical, I would put it horizontal.

You may want to figure out how long it should be and have a muffler shop modify it (or provide a new muffler and pipe.

If you run it horizontal, I think the exhaust opening should be down so rain doesn’t get into the exhaust pipe and then into the cylinder that has an open exhaust valve while in storage.

Your B7200 probably had a FEL attached at some point in the past, hence why it was upright with an extension when you got it. For a mowing machine, it's best to mount horizontally like you have it now. Here is a pic of my B7200 with it mounted horizontally minus the extension.

The muffler on my Ford 1210 rotted out. It discharged in front of the tractor. Whenever I mowed with it the strong diesel exhaust was very annoying. When I replaced it, I took it straight up with a Cherry Bomb and flapper on top. Directing it up made a huge difference. Can't even smell the exhaust now.

I got really tired of breathing diesel exhaust while mowing w/ our B5100; i rotated the exhaust vertical and added a flapper valve. Big improvement.

The exhaust on my B7200 was always vertical and was never an issue under trees. If a branch was low enough to hit the pipe it was low enough to hit me so time to get the chain saw out. My rops was higher than the pipe. The pipe was oem without a flapper but on the rare occasion that the tractor was left outside I put a tin can over it to keep the rain out. I wish the exhaust on my LX2610 was vertical but would take a lot of work to modify it.
