You are probably not getting it to select any gear now.

The shift lever may be moving but really not doing what is required inside the transmission to actually move the gears into proper position.

I think if you try to align the shift forks and gears again it will shift again for a while then stop working again...
After checking that the PTO worked I tried something else. I used the FEL to pull the tractor up a hill on my trail. From there the tractor would roll backwards if I let off the brake while in neutral. But if I put the tractor in 1st it held it’s position on the hill without the brake applied. I think this rules out an issue with the shifter.

This evening I went down to pull the shifter/trans cover off again just to see if I could see anything obviously wrong. There wasn’t anything glaringly broken from what I could see. I put it back on aligning the shift forks as before and started it up. I still had no forward or reverse in low range. But I had not tried high range before so I thought I would give it a shot. As it turned out I had forward/1st gear drive in high range and was able to drive it up out of my field.

I’m guessing some spur gear got stripped for the low range gear? I haven’t been able to locate the correct repair manual on Kubotabooks.com for my non-HST B7100. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

On the HST models, there is a neutral position between low and high range. Any chance you were in neutral?

I think that may have been it. The linkage/lever isn’t particularly tight. The day it happened I didn’t try high range. Doing that was an afterthought. It’s possible it just popped out of low or that I bumped the lever.

It still gets caught between 1st and reverse some times. Particularly when I need to shift on a hill or while under some other load. But other than that it has been working well.

I've never had a tractor transmission apart, so I'm not certain there are parallels. However, I've worked on many motorcycle transmissions and it is critical that the gears are properly spaced (using thin washer-like shims) and the shift forks are not bent out of shape. I suspect something similar is true in your case -- there is excessive play somewhere. It should not be physically possible to engage two gears at the same time. You mentioned taking the transmission to your local dealer for service -- I suspect he didn't get something quite right.

I will assure you.... it's very possible. But, something isn't right causing it.

I posted the same info a week ago in post #15.... At least you're not fighting winter creeping in.

Please don't misunderstand what I said -- I don't doubt that it is happening, I am saying that it should be assembled such as to prevent it. Perhaps a shift fork is bent, or perhaps there is excessive clearance somewhere. I'd also look for signs of wear like rounding, which can cause a shift fork to flex just enough to pop out when under load. A common problem with boats and motorcycles that can sometimes be solved by refacing with a slight back-slope such that the pieces are drawn together under load instead of forced apart.

But again, I have no experience with this or any other tractor transmission, so I cannot offer specific advice.
