Hello Gentlemen,

I have a 1999 B2710 with 1,100 hours on the clock, I have had it for almost 20 years and it hasn't given me any trouble other than standard wear items.

It is used for mowing and pushing snow with a grading blade. Although it gets used, it has never been thrashed on or abused. I have other equipment for heavier tasks.

On to my problem, a few weeks ago the tractor started what I will call "dropping out of gear" randomly, maybe 6 times in 3-4 weeks. Seemed odd to me as it is an HST.

Description of what it does: It just stops, like it popped out of gear. Doesn't seem to matter if it is in forward or reverse, or if it is under a heavier load or not (it has never happened under a heavier load). At first I thought, that was strange, what just happened.

So after it stopped a couple times, I paid closer attention and I could hear a faint chattering sound that would stop when I pushed in the clutch. It is more of a irregular tinny sound like something is bouncing around or bouncing off another gear. It is not a grinding gears sort of sound.

If I shut the tractor down, put it in Neutral and start it back up, put it back in gear, it works fine every time so far, no funny noises, no slipping under load nothing. So I just keep using it...

It has only happened once each time I have used it for 1-3 hours over maybe the last month. It has always been in medium speed range.

I apologize, I haven't look at anything on the tractor. It is cold here, snow on the ground, days are short and I don't have a good place to work on it where it is warm or dry.

If I had to guess, it might have to do with the shift linkage if that is adustable, but shifting into different ranges all feels the same as it always did.

I have only had the issue in Medium range but rarely use other ranges, I have not tried using or testing in High or Low range.

I would guess that I have only used the tractor about 5-8 hours since this issue started.

Has anyone experienced this, have ideas or testing/troubleshooting suggestions.

Regards,
BluffDog

Top of my head, several things come to mind.

Have you checked fluid levels?
When was the last full fluid and filter change?
When was the last time the screens were cleaned or replaced?
Has it been cold when it does this?

Could be the clutch is going out, should be more erratic in high range than low range.

Could be that there is an issue with the propeller shaft or joints from the clutch housing to the HST.

I have the same machine. For sure the gear range selector does not have good “position feedback”. Maybe you’re hung between Neutral and a gear then the selector pops into N when u hit a bump? I’ve done that a couple times.

When this happens have you tried just moving the selector to a different gear or are you shutting down every time?

Thanks for the feedback,

The gear selector does not physically pop into N from where I am sitting as the operator.

The question I have is: Even though there is a good distance between N and M gear selector positions and there is a rather positive feel when I put it into M, could I have a selector linkage adjustment issue and it is popping into N, I just can't see it?

The two last times this happened I have been paying closer attention and it has been on a flat driveway surface that is pretty smooth, no bumps when it actually happens.

I have not tried just moving the selector to a different gear when it happens, I just shut it down each time primarily because I can hear the clattering sound I described. I will try switching to another gear next time.

Have you checked fluid levels?

Yes, fluid level is good.

When was the last full fluid and filter change?

Maybe 200 hrs ago.

When was the last time the screens were cleaned or replaced?

Don't know about screens...

Has it been cold when it does this?

Yes relatively cooler to cold, started when I was doing fall clean-up with the bagger.

Could be the clutch is going out, should be more erratic in high range than low range.

If it were the clutch, wouldn't I have slippage or burnt clutch smell? When it happens, it just stops dead instantly.

Could be that there is an issue with the propeller shaft or joints from the clutch housing to the HST.

How would I diagnosis a problem with the propeller shaft or joints? Would I be able to see this type of issue visually? Unfortunately I have no experience with working on an HST system, but could a propeller shaft of joint problem be this intermittent with no odd noises in between?
