All,

I have a B26. The pinion bearing went out and trashed the diff and a few things in the range gearbox. I’ve completely gone through everything from the flywheel back. The hyd tank was full of bearings, filings, etc.

Of course, that tank and the drive train are now spotless. My question is - does the hydraulic filter system have the ability to bypass the filter? I know that the motor oil systems in a car will bypass when cold or the filter is plugged. I’m trying to determine how much of that trash made it past the filters and into the pump and related cylinders/steering. Theoretically it could be none (if no bypass) or a ton if they can bypass.

I believe they(filter) will bypass. They need the capability when cold…But keep in mind that filter is made to take in a good quantity before it is plugged. You may be lucky.

No hydraulic filters and systems do not bypass!
What good would they be if they let contaminated fluid get to the pump and valves.

The filter should have saved the pump and valves from damage.
But if the element in the filter was plugged to the point of crush then anything could have gotten by it.

Thanks. The filter was not crushed. I will cut it open tonight and see how full it is.
