4740 tractor and price check

I am looking to get an L series with cab, loader, and backhoe. Have been considering a new 3560. Also would consider a nice used tractor.

Today I found a used 2010 L4740 cab tractor with loader. Little bigger than I was planning. But would be ok. Has 850 hours. No backhoe. Would have to add that. Tractor was previously owned by an individual (not used commercially). Looks to be in pretty nice shape. Did an inspection and test drive today. Did not find any issues.

Dealer is asking $27,900 before any negotiation.

So my questions:
1) Is the 4740 a good tractor?
2) What would be a good price? Maybe should spend a little more to get a new 3560?
3) Is there any issues with the tier 4 systems on the new tractors? I do like the 2010 since it does not have tier 4 complications. Should I be worried about this?

Thanks

If you want to add a backhoe on a cab tractor make certain it is a dash 3 model, as in L4740-3. One way to tell is look at the pto engagement device. If it is a yellow rotary knob your ok. If it has a traditional manual lever it is an older design and not compatible with backhoe.

The sticker on the left side of dash will also indicate the model.

I bought a L4740-3 a few months back and very pleased with the extra horsepower over the ROP's L3130. Considered new but didn't want to deal with potential tier 4 issues.

Assuming the tractor comes with a FEL and in decent shape the price seems consistent with what I found.

Good luck with the search.

Thanks for the input. Yes it has a yellow rotary knob for the PTO. Not exactly sure how it works. Looks like you turn it and/or pull it out? We did engage the PTO yesterday (with no load). All seemed to be ok.

Yes it has a FEL.

I wouldn't be worried about the hours. There are a lot of tractors out there with significantly more.

One area to look closely at is the bell housing condensate drain plug (plug with small pin in the middle). Check to make certain there is no fluid coming from this area. If so generally requires splitting the tractor to repair.

Should be a very nice tractor;I have a L4240 HSTC and more than pleased with it.Used Grand L's with-out the newest pollution controls command a premium. Mine was purchased new in Jan.of 2009 and has about 1200 hrs.

Thanks 200mph... Really appreciate your input. I did notice this little pin. When I pushed it seemed like maybe a little water might have been on it. If there were an issue, what would that be? Engine oil seal leaking? Have you heard of many tractors with that issue?

Directly forward of that bell housing plug (6 or 8 inches) was a shaft going to the front of the tractor... looks like drive shaft for the front wheels. It was interesting how the oil pan was made to go around it. Anyway there was a very small amount of some type of fluid directly under what must be the seal for that shaft. Did not feel or smell like engine oil. After we test ran it, no more fluid was there. Not sure what to make of that. Maybe some of that bell housing condensate ran to that as the as the lowest spot?

The pin plug is to help remove condensate, so generally a bit of water is no big deal. Hydro or motor oil is why it would need to be split.

I am still looking. And negotiating. I do think the cab model is pretty important to me to move snow. Dealer has come down some on the 4740. But not quite to the price I want yet. Will be talking to them again tomorrow.
