My 3rd function has been making an unusual noise for months now. Working OK but intermittently making a clicking noise. Finally got it into the Kubota place. Evidently the solenoid has been shorting out. That was the noise. But they quoted $1700 to replace the 3rd function!! Can the solenoid not simply be replaced??? This is on a 2019 MX5400

I presume this isn’t warranty work. If not, you can buy the entire kit, hoses and all from Land Pride for about $1000 and install it yourself in an afternoon. Heck the Kubota dealer here “only” charges $200 labor to install one (so that about an hour and sloppy fast).

I also suspect if you take the damaged one a part and find out who the manufacturer of the solenoid is (because Kubota just uses it, very unlikely they manufacture it) you can probably buy just the solenoid.

You might check online at Messick’s and see if your dealer is blowing smoke on having to replace the entire 3rd function system.

Flat tire, yup, you need a new tractor. That’s the only way they sell them.

Post pictures, any brand and part numbers you can see. Is this Kubota Land Pride or somebody else's? Even if you have to buy a new valve, I bet somebody like @TheOldHokie can put you on to something for a lot less.

D03 valves are standard items designed to interchange. The only issue would be the type of electrical connector - Deutsch most likely. A new 12v Yuken valve with Deutsch connectors is $250. Unplug the old one, remove the 4 socket head cap screws that secure it to the subplate, bolt on the new one, plug it in, and go. You can probably find others for a bit less.

Now to find exactly what it is that was shorting out

Ask JR Long if they might have had some issues with some of their valves. Who knows, they might warranty it for you. It isn't like you are using the tractor daily in commerce.

WRLong also sells the coils and harness connector block individually. Replacing a coil is about 5 minutes work. How or where to buy is not obvious.

A $1700 repair quote is absurd.

dealer likely couldn't find any parts breakdown for it, which then they assume that the only repair is to replace the entire kit

just a guess, saw it a few times.

If the valve is the issue this is likely all you need. Thirty minutes or so to swap the old one out.

That valve appears to be a Hyvair valve (p/n D03S-2C-12D-35) with some sort of WRLong supplied electrical connector block..

I am thinking that connector block may be the source of your problems. Solenoid clicking is probably not a short but rather an intermittent open circuit condition caused by a poor/intermittent electrical connection to the coil. Disassembly and cleaning of the coil contacts might fix it. Or it might be a bad trace or solder joint on that PCB board assembly. Why the felt the need for that custom block escapes me.

I was able to speak with the folks at WR Long. They were GREAT!!! Stated exactly what y’all have been saying. Most likely a bad control board. Very unlikely that the solenoid was bad with so few hours on the tractor. I ordered the $75 board and replaced it in about 20-30 minutes. Will have to give it a try now and see if noise returns.
I don’t think the mechanic did much research. Replacing the ENTIRE 3 rd function for $1700 would have fixed it too. Ha.
this forum saved me $1625, you guys are great. Thx

Glad to hear you got it repaired for a reasonable cost.

Sure would be cool if your dealer was half as great as us. They wouldn’t have tried to take advantage of you.
