2360 Front Axle Maintenance

Just a question about maintenance regarding the front axle on my BX2360.

More specifically, the metal bar running in front of the axle (I don't know what this is called). On each side there is a joint with a rubber boot over it. Both my rubber boots are pretty worn and on one side degraded to the point I think it may be letting in what its supposed to keep out.

I have not seen this area listed in the maintenance section. It looks like there is grease in there yet.

What, if anything, should I be doing to keep this area protected? Should I replace the boot? What type of maintenance should I be doing here?

I used extra heavy mountain bike tire tubes and zip ties...Cleaned and packed in extra grease.
