My 1989 T1600H won't start with the ignition switch.
The problem started about 2 years ago. When I turned
the Key, there was no click, no noise. Nothing. I would
turn the key a time or two and then it would turn over
and start. After a while, it took longer (maybe 5 or 6 attempts)
before it would start. Now the only way I can start it is by
holding a screwdriver from the solenoid to the + on the starter.
I have replaced the Ignition switch and the Solenoid. The
Fusible link is good, I've checked the Fuses and cleaned
the Terminals where the Fuses go in with a nail file. I've
cleaned the Battery connections and tried a direct ground
from the Neg. Post to the Engine. I've By-passed both the
safety switches (one on the Brake pedal and one on the
Lever to engage the Mower). Can you help me? Mark

I want to say that old it should have the points and condenser system on it, which may need to be replaces as well. And have you had the starter motor checked out? They can go bad as well and act goofy when they are on the brink of going.

You might check to see if there is a relay in the starter circuit. Totally different machine, but I have an old Dodge motorhome chassis that does exactly the same thing. When you take the relay apart the contacts look great, but after you clean them up and reinstall it it starts great. Kubota may have used a similar approach in the starting circuit.

GpaG. I went to my local Kubota Dealer and the Service manager let me sit and study the service manual. The manual said that if I had checked everything out, then the problem was the Combination Box which has a starter relay in it. I changed the box
($180.00) and now it is fine. Thanks GpaG, for setting me on the right track

It is great it is starting now. It is a shame you couldn't have just replaced the relay in the combination box, rather than having to buy the whole box. If you haven't thrown the old box away, you may want to keep it for future use, as surely it has various replaceable components inside.
