I was called a miserable, untrusting old fart today.

when I was young and we went to town my mother would tell us not to talk to strangers.

now our grand kids talk to strangers all day on social media, they show strangers what they eat, what their rooms and friends look like, what type of cloths they wear and what the look like, what malls they go to and where they hang out, what the look like in bathing suits, what their credit card numbers (and ccv) to businesses or people they might have no clue who be on the other side of a screen, willing give up their finger prints / palm prints / facial recognition into all measures of security devices run by multinational for profit companys, thet ask for money for all sorts of stuff on gofundme like strangers to pay for their weddings, etc....

has the world really become that safe and trustworthy that our whole life need to be put into the open for all to see and archived in data centers forever and ever?

Short answer is no, the older I get the less I trust most, especially if they're being nice. Yes I'm an old fart to.

Add to that it’s near impossible for many of us to accomplish routine life (business, banking, interaction with government, interaction with vendors, operating various types of equipment, etc.) without going online. Plus we now have Flock cameras surveilling us in public and various devices passively surveilling us in both public and private. That’s created an unimaginably huge amount of data on everyone everywhere. The amount of data and type of data may vary a bit depending on individual location and habits, but it’s out there.

The issue for what to do with all that data has been there’s so much of it in so many disparate systems, it takes a massive amount of work even with computers to get much meaningful out of it. AI and the data centers required to use it answer that “problem”. Artificial Intelligence is a marketing term, and like most marketing terms, it’s a partial truth and complete lie. Yes, it’s artificial. Sometimes it can sort of look intelligent, but it’s not intelligent at all. What it greatly excels at is taking huge quantities of data and aggregating it into stuff that makes sense. So with AI, if I want know what percentage of people in Idaho buy ketchup, what brands they buy, how much they buy, etc. I can do that.

If I want to know who NCL4701 really is, where he was last Tuesday at 3:00 in the afternoon, who he was with, and what they were doing, that’s available also. That example still takes some investigative skills and work to put together, but not nearly as much as it did even two years ago. A few more years, and it will just take asking an AI bot, and that’s the goal. Absolute knowledge to achieve absolute control. No one is even trying trying to hide it at this point.

And for the U.S. specifically, there’s a pretty good argument the 9/11 attacks were effective because they resulted in the Patriot Act which stripped much of our rights restricting mass surveillance of U.S. citizens without probable cause.

I wish my doctors office had the same ability as your car dealers…I think it amuses them to ask me to fill out my address and health history every year…can’t just ask what’s changed, got to start all over and fill out every line.

I have a BiL that actually has no phone, no CC, no internet, no computer. still writes checks to pay his electric billand only has a bank acct because of SSI direct deposit. May be only the NSA knows what he is doing. He lives in a travel trailer on 2 acres.

Yeah. Not surprised they’d use it for property tax confirmation. Eagleview and their main competitor, Hover. Eagleview started in 2008 as a remote roof measuring service for insurance companies and contractors. Hover did roofs and entire exteriors. Both had pictures and diagrams with very accurate measurements. They didn’t go out to get the info on demand, it was in an oft refreshed database waiting to be pulled by anyone who was willing to pay for it. Not at all surprised they’re also selling to municipalities for property tax auditing.

When I was working, I could sit at my desk and pull SSN’s, dates of birth, full names, aliases and name changes, marriage/divorce filings, address history, criminal history, and a very long list of other stuff pretty much all day long on pretty much anyone over 18. There were continuous audit bots in place to make sure I only accessed information relevant to my cases, just like cops aren’t supposed to stalk their ex via Flock. If I had been someone important, it wouldn’t have bothered me. Trouble is, I wasn’t important, yet I still had access to all that. (I started to try to list it all but it was exhausting just trying to remember everything.) And I didn’t need anyone’s permission to access any of it. It was very helpful for investigations, but also disconcerting to me personally.

BTW, @Poohbear, even though I worked in NC and I assume your BIL is in TX near you, so long as he is in the U.S. I could have pulled all that info and more on him, too. Yeah, I would have either needed a real reason to do it or include a couple stray searches in a complex legit case where I was looking for a lot of unrelated legit stuff, but he had a bank account and an electric bill. Bank account, utility bill, W2, federal tax return, or 1099 in his name is all I’d need for him to be in the system with all manner of his data on full view. With a bank account and electric bill he had two. He might as well buy a computer, get a cell phone, and sign up for a few credit cards.

Again, I don’t say this to make out like I was some big shot, important person. To me, the problem is I wasn’t important and had that level of access. Important people have much more data available.

If I had a nickel for every boating accident I have been in where precious cargo was lost…(in all honesty I was in a serious one while in college enroute to a duck blind (I was very happy to have my SP10 in a floating case…I wish I had a floating case for all the other incidents). And let me tell you that water was F N COLD….it took quite a while for my boys to descend.

I forgot all about the insurance angle. I know Nationwide used to use Eagleview but now uses Hover. They might have started as a measuring service, but I'm sure they're used for all kinds of things now. Do you have solar on the roof? A trampoline in the yard? Enclosed parking for your collector vehicle?
