I made a "turnover ball" this evening for the pallet forks using 1/2" plate and some 2" and 2-5/16" balls I've been tripping over for years (don't know where I got them). Last year I cut an 1-3/8" hole in one of the pallet fork tines so that I could mount ball hitches that have a threaded shank and nut, but it's annoying to change them out when I'm moving trailers with different sized couplers.

The hardest part of the job was cutting and attempting to drill the 1-3/8" round bar that I took off a very old JD coulter. It's as hard as anything I've ever encountered so I gave up on the idea of drilling a hole for a spring loaded clip, and welded on a low-profile loop instead. I added a link from a piece of old chain to the front of the hitch so that I have a place to connect safety chains.

I'll test it out tomorrow when I move a couple of trailers around, but it certainly fits on the tine, the pin drops in and all is good. It takes all of 10 seconds to switch from the 2" ball to the 2-5/16" ball or vice versa.

It has rained so routinely this spring/summer it’s been near impossible to do much past mowing the yards in the tight windows where that’s possible. Mostly been quick little jobs in between storms.

Some of the stuff on the sewer line was getting a bit high for my liking being we use it for a Mule road and I prefer trees not take it over. It wasn’t as dry as I’d like, but I have a front wheel assist tractor with a differential lock for going straight and split brakes for turning. No point in having it and not using it.

Most of my implements that are actually used are on dollies in the concrete floored shop so they’re easy to hook up without a quick hitch. The bush hog lives in the dirt floor pole shed. I have at least a fleeting thought of a quick hitch every time I hook it up. It weighs a bit over 500lb so I can’t exactly toss it around, but I can scooch it around a bit to line it up. Today, had my Apple watch on and decided to time myself from this point to hook up without rushing or intentionally being slow. Over 10 minutes, get a quick hitch. Under 5 minutes, no quick hitch. In between, maybe.
IMG_5224.jpeg

Just under 5 minutes later… Was conflicted on whether to be happy or disappointed. Either way, no quick hitch in the near future. Top and tilt speeds the process. Not sure how much but definitely some.
IMG_5225.jpeg

Fuel up. Loader on for front weight and front bumper. ROPs up. Seat belt engaged. Some of the area we’re going is flat, some not.

IMG_5226.jpeg
Some stuff was 6” high, some 7’ high. As expected, a few places were softer than ideal. 4WD and brake steering were both required. Wasn’t bad enough to ever need diff lock.
IMG_5229.jpeg
Better. Didn’t do the entire sewer line. Some was too wet to mow without tearing it up. Some didn’t need it as bad as this section. Got the worst of it, though.
IMG_5230.jpeg

Back home to reconfigure for the flat areas with trees near the houses. Loader off to fit in between trees.
IMG_5240.jpeg
ROPs down to fit under trees. Seat belt doesn’t go with folded ROPs so no seatbelt this time.
IMG_5241.jpeg
Started with the old section of the field in front of our house.
IMG_5242.jpeg
Ran out of time before making it to the front fields. Maybe later this week if we catch a couple days without rain.

Sold the old washing machine to a guy who is building a tiny house and used the tractor and the pallet forks to load it in the back of his truck last night. He said this was the most easiest pick up of a washing machine haha.

A loader makes everything easier.

I'm sure we've all rushed a job trying to get it done and made a bad decision because of it. I didn't like the safety chain "loop" that I added to the turn over hitch. I knew it last night and didn't like the appearance or functionality, and in the cold light of morning I thought "hell no!".

I found a piece of bar stock in my scrap pile, bent it into a loop with the hydraulic press and welded it in a much better position. I used the plasma to burn off that hideous piece of chain link on the end and cleaned it up with the grinder. Now I'm ok with the finished product. I'd still like to drill out the pin for a retaining clip so that when it's not being used, the hitch and pin will stay together. No doubt I'll be using the Drill Doctor quite a bit to get that done.

By the way, it would have been more work than needed to separate the balls from the steel that they were originally welded to so I used a grinder to make the bases as circular as possible with the original plate adding a little extra height, hence why the welds look the way they do.

I'm going to move two trailers later today and will take a photo or two showing this thing in action.

I got the smaller trailer moved, but as I was about to move the bigger trailer a fawn hopped out from underneath. Thank goodness I didn't injure him/her! The bigger trailer will be staying put until the fawn has moved on.

I placed a large piece of plywood up against the trailer to keep the fawn out of the sun and protected from attack from above. I'm sure he/she was nicely tucked away in the tall grass under the trailer until I came along. I filled up the water troughs that I take care of for deer and such since I'm sure that mum will be thirsty.

You can see how the turn over ball hitch works. Overall I'm pleased with it and will call this one done.

Thanks! :)

When the little guy hopped out I had two thoughts since all I saw were the tops of two ears. My first thought was that it was a big bunny rabbit (I have one or two around), and then when I got off the tractor and investigated I was concerned that I might have run him/her over.

I went out this evening to check on the fawn and all appears to be ok. It's still next to the trailer and under the plywood and appears to be fine. Mum should be around later this evening. I think I saw her a few days ago under the kitchen window looking as round as a barrel.

Whether you hand crank the top link or use hydraulics, the angle of the vertical back wall of the BB where the receiver will be mounted changes in respect to the tongue of any trailer hitched to it. I do not see how him having a hydraulic top link solves the angle of the dangle. You still only get one chance to line the receiver up optimally cause once you fully weld that bugger in, she's all but permanent.

Yeah I can see maybe using some strong magnets to line up some mock-ups of the receiver tube out of either taped cardboard or possibly lightweight pine to determine an optimum location and angle for the 2in receiver tube. It's all academic at this point anyway asi have neither the parts on hand or the time to mess with it. But I have saved all this reference material for when I do get ready.
I was more pointing at the fact he can more easily change the angle of the blade and lower it some without giving up too much ground clearance. But yes, I get geometry. I’m a retired engineer. I made my living using geometry. Changing the top link length does some inconvenient things to the back end of attachments.

Mowed last night to beat the incoming weekend rain.

Also, dumped another load of garbage from the dump trailer. I know when we bought the dump trailer, I had the plans of using it to haul gravel and dirt, allowing for driveway repair. Yet, instead, the trailer has hauled dozen loads of brush and logs. Plus, now it is on its third load of garbage from the remodel of the farm house. Wife commented last night that she isn't sure how we would be making the progress we are without the use of the dump trailer. So, I believe we have already gotten our moneys worth from the trailer and still have lots more use for it.

I went over to the dark side. My 80+ yo, widowed neighbor needed a few favors.

Yesterday it was get her ExMark zt going. Tighten the battery cables and jump start it, no problem.

Today it was get her tractor going so she could get someone to bushhog her pasture. She thought it was out of fuel. But, after reconnecting the battery, it started right up. Jeepers was that thing filthy. I had to wipe the cob webs off to even get on it. Then I took it across road to my sister's and we washed it. Then I cut part of her pasture. It's a lot like our Ford 3930, 50+- hp, 2wd, manual transmission, independent PTO.

Tomorrow I need to get back on my trail clearing.

You're a good man for helping out your neighbor ... and that's a really cool tractor. I like the proportions of that thing as well as the orthogonal lines. It looks purposeful and utilitarian. I like the older Kubotas for the same reason.

It's a good simple mowing tractor. It's kind of light in the front with only a 5' cutter, could use some weights. It shows some of its Indian roots, the PTO clutch is apparently manual, the handle is at least 2' long with about that much throw LOL.

I am not a fan of the rounded/sleek styling on new machines…but to be fair I feel the same way about trucks…I like the older square bodies. I really like the fenders on tractors that you could easily mount an actual toolbox too.

I agree! I don't like fluff on anything except chicks, puppies, kittens and the like. My idea of fluff is anything that's added to an object that serves no function other than to appeal to those that value appearance over function and ergonomics. Some industries are rife with fluff and I hate it.

I will say that I don't see a lot of fluff from Kubota.
