Yes the encoder switch must be in its home position ( 0 ) or any number the engineers dreamed up and seat switch made. I spray the foot pedal shaft and the underside linkage with silicone spray on mine every other bath. Dirt and dust aren't drawn as much to the silicone as other heaver lubricants.

Never had much luck with helicoils in applications where constant stress is a concern. I have had very good luck with a insert called ez-lok. They are solid but do require a little more external room to work with. They do make thin and thick wall inserts. Hope this helps. Brian...
