Hi all,

Firstly, I'm grateful to have found this forum, it's already helped me quite a bit as a rookie tractor owner. I fell into owning an older Kubota, a friend with no time for maintenance just up and gave it to me. It's a great little tractor and a big help around the property, and I've been going through it fixing all the little things that need attention.
One problem was the driver's side rear wheel, the pinch bolt on the hub had worked loose over time and the wheel creeped in towards the axle, pushing on it and causing a leaky seal. I replaced the missing pin and put the wheel back where it belongs but that doesn't address the leak. It'll be an expensive trip to the dealer unless I can fix it myself, and although I'm fairly handy this might be a bit much for me to replace the seal.
So, my question is has anyone done this repair before and if so, how difficult is it? Seems like there's a lot to take apart which is fine as long as I don't have to dive into all the gearing and such. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I should add that I have the parts diagram so I can see how everything goes, I'm just not familiar with the procedure for teardown and reassembly.

Thanks,

Brian

With a 1/16 drill bit, drill the face of the seal, one hole on each side of the axle. You only want to penetrate the face material, do not drill further.
Get 2 #8 pan head screws, or drywall screws, and hand thread them into the seal, just far enough for them to grab hold. Take a pair of pliers, or two pair, and pull outward on the seal by tugging on the screw heads, away from the housing, it should pop right out.

You can set the new seal with a piece of PVC, 1 1/2 or 2" or whatever size is best suited, just make sure the tubing is at least an inch longer than the axle.

If you dont not have a seal sleave protector then you at least need to use clear packing tape and cover the axle length wise with it so that when you slide the new seal over it you do not damage the seal from the roughness of the axle.

Lube the seals also before you install.......motor oil or whatever you have on hand.

You can handle this, easy.

Get a bucket ready because fluid will start pouring out when you pull that seal. Also, clean the axle really good and make sure there are no burrs, or mud on it before pulling the seal. You don't want to risk pushing any dirt in the housing, or tearing the new seal while sliding it on.

Thanks for the advice and the picture, you guys.

So just to clarify, the axle cover has to come off (draining the fluid first and cleaning the screen), then the circlip has to come off the axle so the axle can be removed because the seal goes on the axle at that end....correct? Or can I just pull the seal forward to get to the circlip and pull the axle without removing the housing cover?

This link I found on the internet is what's confusing me:

I haven't done it, so I am interpreting their instructions; you replace the seal from the outside, without pulling the axle out of the tractor. You will have to remove the wheel and hub, then work over the exterior axle (from the seal to the outer end of the axle).

As Hodge said..........Do not take anything apart..........you replace from the outside.

Sweet! That'll be so much easier and I don't have to pay for a gasket, either. Much appreciated, my Kubota brethren. I'll post the results after the job is finished.

Thanks,

Brian
