I have a L2600 that the arm on the shift broke off and I am trying to figure out the purpose of the ball and spring? And how do you assembly it without losing the ball and spring in the transmission?
Sorry I have always wanted to know why and how something works

No hands on knowledge but it Looks like a shift rail detent to me.

They are often assembled by placing the ball and spring in the rail and depressing the ball as the rail is inserted in the housing. Whether you can do that without losing it inside the transmission is a function of your dexterity :)

I don’t really know how that works on your tractor but I ASSUME it is a TWO position lever since it has TWO names (turtle and rabbit). I further assume there is no neutral position on that lever.

So the lever swings the part #80 forward or backwards. The ball depresses the spring as that movement occurs but as soon as the #80 part passes the vertical position there is a force from the spring that moves the ball upward and pushes the #80 part into the selected position (turtle or rabbit) and then holds #80 up in that position.

Sometimes you can feel it as it pops across the maximum vertical position. But that spring is probably pretty small and won’t exert very much force on #80, but enough to hold it above vertical.

I assume if there was a neutral position there would be a slight divot hole drilled into the bottom of #80 so the ball would sort of catch that position and hold it there.

The spring #70 and the ball #60 are in a pocket in the shift fork (yellow) that when #20 shaft is inserted inside the shift fork the ball pops in and out of the slots (green) on that shaft detenting it into a position, High, Neutral, Low.
The ball and spring does not engage #80 (orange), that lever just engages the slot on top of the #10.
If you broke #80 you won't even mess with #60 and #70 to replace #80.

it looks like it may be out of sequence. The ball on the bottom of the hole. That would engage the shift rail detents from what I see.
The pocket for the spring and the ball in the fork is under the shaft and pushes the ball up into the bottom notches of the shaft.
The lay out is correct.
