So I have been looking at implements..... The cost/benefit on say a tiller for my b8200 vs renting one when im going to use it or paying someone to till it for me. Used ones seem to be non-existent and the one i did find was in almost non-rebuild able shape. Does this simply want vs need.......

I guess it depends how large of an area you have to do, how often you will do it, and how much time you have. It would be nice to have, but I don't have one.

I can see having a rear blade for what i do..... in the future a rear carry-all..... but past that i just can't see it. The tiller would be used 30 minutes maybe once a year. So run time is 10-12 hours max use in my lifetime.

At 1/2 hr per year. you don't need to rent a tiller, let alone BUY one ! Hire a local kid to use a walkbehind tiller.
I probably average 50-70 hrs a season ( x 2..spring and fall), with the 5' tiller I bought 16 years ago. While I have zero use for it now, neighbours love it when I show up !! I can also get MORE for it than what I paid for it ,when (if ? ) I decide to sell it.

So everybody seems to be big into FEL's. I found one two days ago for my tractor, $4400. It was in nice shape, but once again cost/benefit....... I don't move earth and don't really cut or deal with to many trees. A $250 + wood carryall would do me better because I could remove it easily.

I tend to go the other way.
I needed a post hole digger years ago to plant 100 4x4's for a dog fence. Found one on Craigslist, bought it, used it and sold it.
Ditto on a tiller. I got 'knock your socks off' prices to put in a new 3/4 acre lawn at our old house. Bought a new tiller, used it and sold it.
Ditto on my chipper.

I like to work at my own pace which usually isn't a good thing for renting.

I tend to purchase what I want or need, and I seem to hold onto it because once I sell it, I will find that I need one again in a short timeframe. I did just sell my SSQA plow, and if I get energetic I will take pictures of my snowblower that I bought for my BX23S when I bought the tractor, but replaced last winter with a larger commercial snowblower. I also bought a snowblower for a Kubota RTV1100C last summer, but so far I haven't found an RTV close enough to buy it at a reasonable price. My wife keeps asking what is she to do with all of the "crap" when I die. I told her that it was her next husband's job to figure it out.

My "wife" issue was resolved (at great expense),....in 1997
I have had the same SO since 2000, but getting rid of all my "stuff" is not going to fall on her.
I have a daughter, and two sons.
After my paying all their educational expenses, they should certainly be well equipped "to figure it out" ;)

Good day. I think all of our situations a little different. For me it comes down to do I want to have ready access? Simple answer is absolutely.

Long answer…To me a tiller is one of those items that it’s used one or twice a year and when they are used they are a blessing…sure beats a shovel or pitch fork…the bigger the garden the more they help. I don’t have a rental place real close and honestly I don’t want to hook up the trailer or deal with rental places and try to time the weather / moisture level in the soil. For me, I have a time of year I want to get my garden tilled and early stuff in by, and when I get to a month in front of that target, whenever I see the ground is about correct moisture level on I put tiller on and the spin the tines…it could be during week after work or a weekend. Either way I use it based on the condition of my garden space. So for me it’s convenient having it readily available on my schedule. Does that make financial sense, maybe not…but as soon as I start doing the math there are a lot of things I am attached too that I would not need. I am ok with that. I like the self sufficiency aspect. Anyway to each their own…if not a production user with the machine it’s probably pretty hard to justify most of the attachments and maybe even the machine. Grapples and every other awesome implement are the same way. So it sort of comes down to your goals for having the machine. Good luck. 🥃

You make a lot of valuable points. Justify the machine..... Since I have owned my house I have bought 4 pieces of equipment. Only one, a simplicity legacy stood up to my yard. It died. The next machine was an expensive of crap. I wanted a well built, tough tractor to replace it....I wanted a Kubota. I admit I have always wanted a tough as nails piece of equipment. $25k worth of equipment over 27 years, on a teachers salary that is a lot. My two degrees did cost that much. So a good used Kubota was what I wanted.

The costs for all the next stuff is got me doing the cost/benefit analysis.

Another way to look at it…at least for me…if I go through the all the closets in the house and total up the price of just the shoes and boots that have not been worn in the past year, that’s more money right there than my tiller. Want to see the shoes / boots and raise me the sweaters…well then that covers a couple more attachments. Open the closets and do some cost justification there…I guarantee my occasional use implements make a lot more sense than some other stuff. To each there own really…sometimes priorities don’t allow everything at once or it simply doesn’t make sense. That’s ok too. Anytime I get wrapped around the axle about what a tool that know I am going to use will cost all I have to do is open the closet door, and that sort of nudges me to get what I have a plan to use more than once.is it an expensive hobby, yep. And I love every minute of it….i smile more on the tractor than I do at my desk at work. 🥃

I feel very fortunate being comfortable working on mechanical things. It allows the freedom to not need all things new. I've purchased a lot of "stuff" that needs at least a paint job at a very discounted price. Still does the work of new and it makes owning things not needed very often much easier to own.

A couple of months ago I bought a 5' tiller for $1200 and I don't have garden or plan to have a garden. It's just a heavy tiller with very few hours on it, but it's probably at least 15 years old. Guy was telling me about it, been in his barn for about 10 years and never used it, he got it from his dad who bought it new and used it a couple of years in his personal garden and got sick.

I just always have a "stash" I can use to buy things on a whim. When I do something with this tiller that will go into the "stash" for the next whim! Keeps life exciting.

Do something you enjoy as a hobby to get a "stash" and you won't need to ask anyone! ;) ;)

It's not the my wife says no, or it costs to much for her. The fact is she said buy a new Kubota, no joke. I could of had a new LX. I wanted an older b series. I was just lucky to find an 8200. I love the way she looks and how she works....Have you seen my other posts? Think I over analyze stuff? Well I am at the point in my life where phase 3 kicks in, retirement. Just trying to plan for my needs and trying to buy the toys to fit those needs.

I checked Facebook Marketplace and within 80 miles of Grass Lake Michigan there are a dozen used tillers being offered for sale. Check it out. Good luck.

Just having the freedom to do something when I want, for as long as I want, the way I want, is enough justification for me to just buy it. (most things that is)

I'm to impulsive/impatient/cranky/cantankerous to wait, or have a deadline to get it back by....

In 10 years it will probably be worth more than you paid for it.....unless you believe the inflation numbers from .Gov.....then theres nothing I can do for you.....sorry.

Speaking of .Gov...............I just bought myself a Christmas present.....
