This is a pic of my great uncle pre ww2. He was in the Army Air Corps and later flew B-17s. Its my understanding the plane in the background is a trainer and was wondering if anyone can identify it? I think i know what it is, a Stearman PT17, but not sure as i dont know how to identify correctly. I know there are some pilots and aircraft fans in here.

Just guessing on the first one, but it's probably a Stearman trainer.

The second one is a B24 Liberator.

It is a bi-wing with a radial engine, so my guess is that Curtis Wright manufactured it. Possibly a Wright R-975 Whirlwind?

The US Army Air Corps, the US Navy, and the RCAF all used PT-17's as trainers.
That is a Stearman PT-17.
The Navy designation was N2S-3

Yes. it's a Lancaster
with me as the pilot-in-command.
"with me as pilot in command"
Another of your wildly exaggerated dreams?

Yep, Stearman. My Dad piloted 35 missions (actually copiloted the first 2) for the 381st in 1944.

I received my US Navy wings on April 9th of 1964.
Then accumulated just over 30,000 hours of pilot time,..... including some carrier landings.
Many A/C types, last being nearly 5,000 hours on 747-400.

Impressive!
Side question- Did you ever fly any Airbus planes?

The reason I ask is that our dune group had two pilots who worked for America West, both about the same age & experience. They got along great duning, in camp, and around the campfire, UNTIL you brought up aircraft manufacturers. One flew Boeing, the other Airbus, and they HATED each others planes. Almost to the point of fisticuffs. We could never get either one to explain the problem, and the only thing we could guess was that one was US made, the other not. Weird.

I have flown: Lockheed/Douglas/Boeing.
Never Airbus!
My airline eventually did have many smaller Airbus airplanes.

Boeing builds Mercedes/Fendt!
Airbus builds Chevrolet/RK!
