And that i
That will be the 2nd step in this garden. The first being where and how big.
I will soil sample and drop off at local UGA extension office.
And that is a good approach. But always add composted organic matter. Even if nutrients aren’t needed, organic matter helps improve soil tilth and water management.

Of course. I’ve got piles of old nasty leaves and wood chips ready to be worked in.

Wood chips can tie up nitrogen until they are rotted. If you use them, it’s best to add nitrogen fertilizer. Or use them as mulch on top of soil to reduce weeds.

Do NOT put ANY Black Walnut leaves into a veggy garden !!
Do NOT make a garden anywhere NEAR a Black Walnut tree !!

Thay have a poison in them(100% of the tree) that'l kill tomatoes, peppers and more.

Yes, NEVER use fresh wood chips as a mulch. they'll suck all the nitrogen out of the soil. Build a compost row, put them there along with leaves, kitchen waste, any/all 'biomatter'. Toss/turn/fluffup the row every month. To get compost fast, read what Mexicocity does to make theirs, I think in 6 weeks. There was a TV show about it 10-15 years ago.Impressive results !!

I blow all my leaves in one area of my yard, a low spot. Everything has mostly turned to dirt minus this years leaves. I'll mix a bit then haul to garden. FIL has the chips, I'll hold off on them till they turn to dirt.

I find 'THE' test for any veggie garden is whether you can grow an entire row of 'picture perfect' 14" long carrots.Much harder than 1800# pumpkins

I have a huge pile of wood chips ash and maple mix and a huge pile of pine separate from the other pile. Any problem using the pine to make compost? Of course I wouldn't use it in the garden until its mostly decomposed and it would be mixed with green and leaves.

NO problem. I used to get 100-200 cu yds of it as 'stable sweepings' ( horse poof/pine shavings). It''d compost down in 3-4 months, GREAT stuff....

Or use them as top mulch to control weeds. After one growing season, turn them under in the fall. They should decompose, but for good measure use a high nitrogen fertilizer next spring.

In 20+ years tending this garden, never added store bought fertilzers. Use grass clippings for path and plant 'mulch', LOTS of 'compost, and always add busted up new drywall in the fall.

I would never fault a person for buying implements ...
I've learned a lot from this thread and kind of wish I had an excuse to buy one or more of the implements discussed here but I don't think any of them will help me up here in pulverized rock country. This is a very cool thread though! (y)

If you live in the east with acid soils, the drywall is beneficial. If you live in the west with alkaline soils, drywall would destroy the soil.

Talked with FIL tonight while getting firewood for the great snow storm in Georgia on Sunday.

He thinks a 2 bottom plow, let that sit awhile, then till will be fine. He did like the idea of disc after the 2 bottom too, as his tiller is probably older than the dirt it will be tilling, and the disc will “chop” it up some.

yes, it'll work , tricks are..
1) waiting long enough for the sod to break down BUT not get totally dried. You need 'some' moisture in the soil...
2) go SLOW with the tiller,ok, maybe a bit faster. You'll know by 'feel' just how fast you can go.Too fast,it'll be a choppy ride, to slow and it's a waste of time and fuel
I'd also till N-S one day then E-W next day. Give soil time to rest, relax and will make for smoother gardens.

Finally got around to buying something.
Went with the 82” 20 20” discs. Should be nice after the 2 bottom in garden and to rough up a few wildflower spots for the pollinators.

This is done with a single gang ATV disk with a broadcaster attached. The broadcaster has fertilizer in it while I am working the soil. About 3 passes in a pattern (N/S, then NE/SW, then E/W) to break up soil (I like about golf ball sized). Add seed to the broadcaster & make 1 more pass. The seeds will fall in the grooves made by the disk & in between the small dirt clods. I made a steel bar drag (3, inch thick steel bars welded 8” apart) to smooth it all out. I’ll get a better disk someday, but for now ….

Ha! I put black in the comments, or yellow, I don’t care. We’ll see what shows up!
Good Works Tractors featured a Dirt Dog disc harrow today. They're made in GA and appear to be decent products. After watching the video I found myself wishing I had a need for one!
